ACTIVITIES IN LONDON VISIT TO THE CONTINENT (From Our Special Correspondent.) LONDON, April 16. The Minister of Finance and Marketing (the Hon. W. Nash) left for the Continent this morning accompanied by two members of his staff, Dr W. Jo. Sutch, and Mr J. P. D. Johnsen. The Minister decided to utilize the short time before the arrival of the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) in London to visit Germany and Soviet Russia to discuss trade matters. Mr Nash will investigate the possibilities of direct reciprocal trade between Germany and Russia and New Zealand, and will also examine at first hand the administrative procedure associated with the economic and social life of the two Continental countries. Mr Nash’s engagements for Monday of this week included a call from Lord " Balfour of Burleigh, who recently visited the Dominion. Later in the morning, the Minister visited the London Fruit Exchange at Spitalfields and there inspected the showrooms and stores of the firm that handles all New Zealand fruit in the provinces. Mr Nash attended the auction of the first shipment of New Zealand apples fh* s season, and was pleased to find that they brought payable prices. At luncheon the Minister discussed with principals of the firm the marketing of New Zealand produce. The Minister was the guest of the Danish Legation in London at dinner in the evening for the purpose of meeting the Prime Minister of Denmark. Mr Nash visited Smithfield on Tuesday to inspect a show of New Zealand pigs from the Royal Agricultural Show held at Christchurch last November. Viscount Bledisloe, whose challenge cup was awarded to ihe best single baconer rarrass, was also present. The judges stated that the baconers were a very fair lot and generally good average curers’ pigs. In the evening, Mr and Mrs Nash, together with Mr Walter Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, and Mrs Runciman, dined as the guests of Viscount and Lady Bledisloe. Among Mr Nash’s engagements for the following day was a visit to the Dominions Office, Downing street, where the Minister spent some time with the Minister of Agriculture (Mr W. S. Morrison) and the Secretary for the Dominions (Mr Malcolm MacDonald), discussing the proposed trade agreement. The Minister attended the opening of the apple season at New Zealand House yesterday morning, the ceremony being performed by Mrs W. J. Jordan. Viscount Bledisloe was among those present. In the evening, Mr Nash was a guest at the annual dinner of the Association of British Chambers of Commerce at the Hotel Victoria. Mr Nash, with the High Commissioner for Canada (Mr Vincent Massey) responded to the toast to the British Commonwealth of Nations. Mr Nash expects to return to London at the end of this month.
