The wretched state of houses in various parts of New Zealand was commented upon by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary in Charge of Housing (Mr J. A. Lee), when speaking on the Government’s housing scheme at Auckland. Mr Lee said that when in Dunedin last year he had found in Mafeking terrace houses which had no hot water, were below the level of the road, and in which the tin baths were used for storing lumber. "I was forced to exclaim, ‘Good , it is 1936, and Mafeking is not relieved yet.”' Mr Lee added that he considered the bathroom in any house should be the most attractive part.
