COMMENTS The stories this week were all of a high standard, and judging was difficult. The introduction and conclusion of Cousin Ray McLeay’-s story are very effective. Short sentences are very useful, but do not overdo them, Cousin Ray. Cousin Helen’s story showed originality of thought. She departed from the fairy story type of entry, and made [ her carpet take her travelling. 368th COMPETITION Poem for all Cousins: “To a Sparrow.” Prizes of 1/- to Cousins Ray McLeay M.A.C., (14), Otahu-Black-mount R.D., Otautau, Norman Hall (13) Aparima, Otautau R.D., Edmund Maloney (13), Makarewa. Highly Commended and 2 marks to Cousins Isobel McKenzie M.A.C., (15), Dipton, Graeme Anderson (12), 78 Don street, Marion Stobo A.C., (14) 20 Wellington street, Jeanette Moore M.A.C., M.M.S., (12), 57 St. Andrew street, Clara Lobb, A.C., (12) Southland Hospital, Jacqueline Reid (11), 107 Lewis street, Ruth Dowden (14), 11 Scandrett street, Constance Lloyd V.A.C., (13), Dipton, Ray McLeay M.A.C., (14), Otahu-Blackmount R.D., Otautau, Joyce Howden (11), Mataura Island. COMMENTS The three prize poems, though not outstanding, were well thought out and constructed. They all have foui’ lines to a verse, with a simple rhythm and rhyme. The fourth
verse of Cousin Norman’s poem is not up to the standard of the others, and I think it could have been omitted. The faults in the other poems are mainly in the metre. Befor you try to use a complicated pattern make sure that you have mastered the simple types cf rhythm. 369th COMPETITION Story for Cousins 11 and under: “What I Should Like to be When I Grow Up.” Poem for Cousins 12 and over: “The Sailor.” Entries close MONDAY, April 26.
370th COMPETITION Essay for all Cousins: “Home for the Coronation.” Poem for all Cousins: “My Mother.” Entries close MONDAY, May 3.
