Guy, of London, who have been visiting Invercargill to arrange for an exhibition of the work of disabled British sailors and soldiers, returned north yesterday. The engagement is announced between Albert Francis, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. G. Martin, of Invercargill, and Olive Russell, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs George Smith, df Heriot. Mrs Charles White, Dominion president of the League of Mothers, and Mrs Leslie Wall, Dominion secretary, of Wellington, have left for Balclutha after a visit to Dunedin and Invercargill. The engagement is announced of Diana, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Lainchbury, West Plains, to Andrew Nicholson, second son of Mr and Mrs W. J. Reid, Newcastle street, Invercargill. Mr and Mrs R. A. McCaughan, Ryal Bush, accompanied by Miss Maisie Kilkelly, Dalrymple road, attended the Waimate races before going to Christchurch for the McCaughan-Ryan wedding which took place at the beginning of the week. On Monday afternoon Mrs C. F. Bruce, Tuatapere, was hostess at a kitchen party for Miss Mollie Charlton whose wedding to Mr Les. Guthne took place yesterday. Competitions were won by Mrs A. D. McClymont, Mrs J. A. Mangan and Miss M. Charlton. Mrs Bruce, on behalf of those present, asked Miss Charlton to accept the gifts and Miss Charlton replied. A dance was held in the Brydone Public Hall in aid of the King’s Memorial Fund. Halbert’s dance band provided the music and Miss E. Smyth (Brydone) played an extra.
