FARMERS’ RISING COSTS
DEMAND FOR LABOUR-SAVING DEVICES (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, April 20. “Speaking with a fair knowledge of Otago conditions,” said Mr Arthur Craig, vice-chairman of the Farm Accounting Association of New Zealand, at the annual meeting tonight, “I would say that one of the direct results of the rising costs is that farmers throughout this province are endeavouring wherever possible to do without men. I am told by implement agents that there has been an unprecedented demand for tractors and for other laboursaving implements. Fanners make no secret of the fact that they intend to do without teams, and thus effect a saving in labour. Many declare that they will not be dominated by Labour unionism however mild the particular brand/ On all sides there is definite evidence of the limitation of‘cropping and many dairy farmers are selling off their cows rather than employ labour at the existing rates. Rising costs are the order of the day. It now costs more to replace wheels on a dray than it cost for the original dray.”
