BASKETBALL
MENZIES ASSOCIATION COMPETITIONS COMMENCED Favoured with ideal weather on Saturday afternoon, the A and B grade competitions under the Menzies Association were commenced. In the A grade matches Menzies Ferry were easily defeated by last year’s champion, Seaward Downs, while Mataura Island had a comfortable win over Wyndham.
MATAURA ISLAND A v. WYNDHAM
This match was played at Wyndham and the teams were as follows:— Mataura Island.—E. Rhodes, M. Rhodes, M. Dunn; E. Howden, J. Todd, A. Richardson; K. McLeary, Mrs J. Davidson, W. Christie. Wyndham.—F. Laurie, S. Strang, Mrs E. S. Macfarlane; Mrs D. McCaughan, B. M. Falconer, M. Somerville; M. Gorman, M. Savage, J. Young. From the throw-off Mataura Island attacked briskly and soon had the Wyndham defence in difficulties. Lost opportunities by Wyndham shortly put Mataura Island even further in the Ipad. Stronger defence by the Wyndham backs checked the visiting team, who were, however, at their best in the attacking division, and missed few opportunities, the half-time score being 7—l against the home team. In the second half the Wyndham team played with greater cohesion, all divisions playing with more life. In her first A grade match S. Strang, of the Wyndham team, played well, netting the majority of the goals for the home team. The home defence improved to hold in check the Matailra Island forwards, who still were the best combining unit on the field. The final score was 12—7. The game was controlled by Mr E. S. Macfarlane. SEAWARD DOWNS A v. MENZIES FERRY A This proved to be rather one-sided, as Menzies Ferry was without four of its regular players. At half-time the score was 12 goals to four, and in the second spell Seaward Downs notched fourteen more goals to Menzies Ferry’s two. The match was played at Menzies Ferry. The teams were as follows:— Menzies Ferry.—G. Weir, A. Weir, M. Newman; E. Ross, N. Hamilton, B. Caldwell; N. Crosbie, I. Gregory, D, Ross.
Seaward Downs.—M. Palmer, J. Palmer, ,D. Donnelly; E. Lorimer, L. Drysdale, K. Morton; J. Crosbie, J. Hawke, K. Gorman. The game was played at a fast pace throughout, but the Seaward Downs team was superior in all thirds, and gave a great display of passing combination. M. Palmer, J. Palmer and D. Donnelly (forwards) deserve praise for their speed, excellent handling and positional play. The winner’s centre line also played well, but lacked the combination of the other thirds. Menzies Ferry’s team, is much weaker this year and four of the players in Saturday’s match were not in the A or B grade teams last season. Their individual play was quite sound, but much practice will be necessary to develop a combination.
WYNDHAM D.H.S. BI v. BH Last year’s B grade champions, Wyndham District High School, played its own second team and scored a comfortable win by 18 goals to three. This years’ junior team contains several young players of distinct promise. The score at half-time was 11—3 in favour of the winners, who scored another seven in the second spell.
The teams were:— Wyndham District High School I.— M. Hunter, J. Rabbidge, E. Stevens; M. Harley, B. Thomson, L. Stewart; W. Smith, A. Maude, M. Stirling. Wyndham District High School H— C. Black, M Davis, D. Richardson; N. Hunter, J. McKerrow, L. Diack; B. Winter, E. Cormack, A. Pauli. WYNDHAM B I v. MATAURA ISLAND B Playing on the Mataura Islan dcourt, Wyndham I defeated the home team by 8 goals to four. The teams were as follows:— Mataura Island.—B.’Camie, T. Lawrence, Mrs Richardson; D. Dunn, M. Howden, M. Gibb; M. Rule, A. Gibb, H. Davidson. Wyndham.—J. Duncan, J. Robson, 1. Todd; T. Crosbie, Mrs Hagen, F. Livingstone; M. Frame, B. Stevens, J. Blackbum. . , Play was fast from the beginning to the end, and, considering it was the first match of the season, both teams gave a splendid exhibition. Wyndham always held a slight lead, however, the half-time score being 4—l, which was increased to B—4 in the second spell. For the winners, J. Duncan played very well in the forward third.
EDENDALE B v. WYNDHAM B H The above two teams had a very even match on the Edendale courts, the home team clinching a win in the last five minutes to win by 12 goals to nine. The teams were as follows:— Edendale.—F. McDonald, E. Ward, F. Duncan; G. Fraser, R. Pow, E. Morris; L. Frame, D. Pow, J. Waddell. Wyndham.—B. McKerrow, G. Gaw, E. McGowan; A. Traynor, O. Milne, E. Todd; M. Crosbie, J. Munro, B. Dennis. Wyndham could field only eight players and E. McGowan (Edendale) substituted. In the first half Edendale had a decided advantage in the play, the centres working particularly well. The forwards, however, failed many times to score from easy positions. The half-time score was 5—3 in its favour. In the second spell, Wyndham was much more aggressive and the score was brought to 9—all. Here, however, in the last few minutes, Edendale secured three goals in quick succession to give it a win by 12 goals to 9. The Wyndham forwards lacked combination.
Mr H. Hickey controlled the game.
GLENHAM v. TUTURAU
Much interest was attached to this match because Tuturau was making its debut in the Menzies Association’s competition. An excellent game was witnessed, Glenham winning by the narrow margin of 5 goals to three. Indications are that Tuturau will be a team to be reckoned with during the season.
The teams were as follows:— Glenham.—A. Bain, M. Hunter, J. Bell; D. Matheson, M. Templeton, D. Bennie; N. Brown, I. Howe, N. McPhedran.
Tuturau.—l. Mitchell, E. Galt, V. Burgess; J. Patrick, R. Blair, D. Mitchell; Mrs L. G. Townsend, Mrs Johnstone, M. Wards. The game was played at a fast pace throughout and the half-time score was 4—2 in favour of Glenham. Each side could secure only one goal in the second spell, which was a true indication of the teams’ strength. Glenham won by superior shooting, but the highlight of the game was the excellent handling of the Tuturau players. Outstanding in the Tuturau team were Mrs L. G. Townsend (defender) and R. Blair (centre), while for Glenham A. Bain (forward) and I. Howe (defender) were very steady. Mr A. Ferguson was the referee. SEAWARD DOWNS B v. WAIMAHAKA B I On the Seaward Downs court, the home team had an exciting match against Waimahaka B I and managed to win. only by 12 goals to eight. The
first spell was very evenly contested ending in favour of Seaward Downs by four goals to three. Mr H. P. Bryant was the referee. ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
PROTESTS AGAINST DECISION ON REPLACEMENTS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 20. Disapopintment at the New Zealand Football Association Council deciding to allow replacements only up to naif time was expressed in letters received at tonight’s council meeting from the Otago Association and the New Zealand Referees’ Association. The referees’ letter stated that while adopting 'the amendment, the members of the association were emphatic in their protests at the parent association’s attitude. The Otago Associations letter said it was understood that the replacement rule would be operative either for the whole game or at least until within 15 minutes of the finish. The rule as it now stood appeared more open to abuse
than if it operated over the whole game. It was stated at the council meeting that it was intended to ask the English team to allow replacements for the whole time, and it was considered that they would agree, but not everyone agreed as to the wisdom of replacements and it was a reasonable compromise to have replacements only up to the start of the second spell. It was decided to reply to the Otago Association accordingly. AMATEUR TEAM TO TOUR NEW ZEALAND LONDON, April 19. The New Zealand High Commissioner (Mr W. J. Jordan) entertained at luncheon the English amateur soccer players, who later left for New Zealand on board the Tamaroa. The players were presented with badges combining the emblems of the lion, the kiwi and the kangaroo. TEST MATCH TO BE PLAYED ON ATHLETIC PARK WELLINGTON, April 20. By the generosity of the management committee of the Wellington Rugby Union, which tonight granted the New Zealand Football Association’s request, the match between the English soccer team and New Zealand, on June 26, will be played at Athletic Park. It was explained that this was the only ground where the association could get a good gate, and the use was granted as a friendly gesture to a sister code. MATCHES IN BRITAIN LONDON, April 19. BOXING
AITKEN’S BOUT WITH GILDO Billy Aitken, who will meet Young Gildo at the Civic Theatre next Wednesday night, has been sparring daily with Invercargill amateur boxers. Aitken has confidence in his ability and contends that he will be the first New Zealand boxer to beat the Filipino. Gildo is a brilliant boxer, and he has had plenty of bouts recently to make him fit. As a boxer Gildo is clever and very fast, with ability to mix it when required. Hie amateur preliminaries are above the usual standard. To enable Baker and Lambert, the two promising amateurs, to gain experience, the Southland Boxing Association is bringing from Timaru two good boxers in Craib and Sullivan. Last year Craib obtained a decision over Baker and Baker is anxious to win this fight. Arty Sutherland .is fighting well and his bout with Mclver should be interesting. Mclver was a semi-finalist at the New Zealand championships last year.
