FLOOR “PAVED WITH GOLD”
JOB FOR A CHARWOMAN LONDON, February 27. The most responsible “char-lady’s” job in London is vacant. The successful applicant will be working on floors paved with gold—almost literally. She is wanted at the London fountain pen factory of Conway Stewart, Ltd. Her work will include the clearing of a room where every tiny dirt particle has to be carefully gathered, bottled and put into a three-ton safe. The room is one- in which gold nibs and iridium tips go through the process of manufacture. “Last year we reclaimed £3400 worth of gold from dirt gathered by our cleaners,” a director of the firm said. “This is not the only way in which we salvage gold wastage. Every worker in the gold room has to wash his hands in a special sink. Over £5 worth of gold is extracted from a soap sud trap every week. “The cleaner has also to wash her hands in the gold-room sink. Our last employee, who was with us 12 years, would have washed nearly £3OO worth of gold particles into London’s sewers, if she hadn’t.”
