FAILURE TO VOTE

DEMANDS FOR EXPLANATION Federal returning officers throughout Australia were to begin immediately after Easter the task of posting about 200,000 notices to electors in Australia who did not vote at the recent referendum, inviting them to explain why they should not be prosecuted. Since the referendum poll the rolls have been examined to determine the number of notices to be sent out. About 70,000 of those recorded as having failed to vote have been found to have changed their address, or to have left Australia. Of the remaining 200,000, it is probable that only a small proportion will be prosecuted, as the experience after past polls has been that most of the defaulters have been able to offer reasonable excuses to the department.
