SINGAPORE AIRPORT

FAMOUS PILOT’S LANDING SINGAPORE, March 6.. The famous Dutch airman, Captain Parmentier, who was co-pilot of the Dutch aeroplane which gained second place in the London-Melbourne air race, had the honour of landing the first air liner at the new Singapore airport, which is to be officially opened on May 15. He was at the controls of a Royal Dutch Douglas air liner on i(s way from Batavia, Java, to Singapore and Europe. Because of a terrific rain storm at the Singapore air base, where air liners at present normally land, the air liner was warned by radio not to land there. The only feasible alternative was the new airport. . The distinction of having christened” the new airport was gained by three Hawker Osprey machines from the aircraft-carrier Hermes in November 1935. The Ospreys were forced down in a sudden storm. And so the airport received its baptism without brass bands, governors or gold braid.
