The purpose is to supply water for the Ashburton-Lyndhurst irrigation scheme and all the anticipated water requirements for the rest of Ashburton County. The total length of the race will be approximately 35 miles, and the total area served 200,000 acres. The combined cost of the two schemes will be nearly £1,000,000.
