PUBLIC WORKS MEN AT PUKERAU
MR SEMPLE CONFUSES CAMPS (United Press Association), HAMILTON, March 18. A denial that he had refused to hear a deputation from the Public Works men at Pukerau was made by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) today. The Minister said he had confused the Pukerau camp in his first statement with another camp he had visited 40 miles away. He had just learned from Mr Kelliher, Public Works Engineer at Dunedin, that while he was at Gore two men from Pukerau saw Mr Kelliher over their complaint and, after discussion, seemed satisfied. Mr Semple said he had visited the district on February 11 and the job had only just started then so that there would be little time for grievance and any wet weather took place after his visit.
“Instead of airing their grievances through the proper channels,” he said, “they rushed into print and blamed me for the wet weather. I am always ready to hear bona fide complaints and put any matter right, but obviously it is impossible for me to hear minor grievances. That is why the proper machinery through the engineers is provided.”
