BIG PAY DAY AT BLUFF

£5OOO DISTRIBUTED Yesterday £5OOO was paid out in wages by the Railway Department and shipping companies to the waterside workers at Bluff. The distribution of such a big sum will give a considerable fillip to business at the port. Of the £5OOO approximately £2OOO represented ordinary wages. The balance was retrospective wages from October 1, 1936, in accordance with the recent watersiders’ award. All workers, including casuals during the period mentioned, participated in the big payout. It was reported from New Plymouth last week that the pay-out there for retrospective wages amounted to £3OOO. PAYMENT AT AUCKLAND (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 18. With the addition of back pay resulting from the new industrial agreement, approximately £20,000 was distributed amongst the watersiders at Auckland today. Non-unionists also received their ordinary pay today, but will not receive back pay until Monday. This will bring the total pay-out this week-end for all waterside workers to approximately £25,000. £28,000 DISTRIBUTED IN WELLINGTON (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 18. Approximately £28,000, in addition to the ordinary weekly wages amounts, went’ into the pockets of Wellington waterside workers and tramwaymen today. This money is due in the case of waterside workers to increases in pay earned retrospective to October 1, 1936 under an agreement made with their employers and, in the case of tramwaymen, to back pay dating to July 1, 1936 for Sunday work. The approximate total payments are: To the waterside workers from shipping companies, £15,000; to the waterside workers from the Wellington Harbour Board, £10,000; to the Wellington tramway motormen, and conductors, £2500; to the employees in the other tramway departments, £5OO.
