Kennington FARMING

The intake, at the local factory, of milk is still in excess of that for the same period of last year, four vats being in use turning out some 36 cheeses a day. It is not considered the back end of the season will be as good as last year because of the continued, wet weather retarding the growth of winter feed. Turnip crops look well above the ground but in most cases the bulbs are poorly developed. With a spell of fine warm weather this fault may be improved. With the change in the weather, hay, which has been lying out for many weeks, has now been stacked but lias lost a lot of its feeding value. Oat crops are being cut wherever the ground is in a fit state for the binder to work on. The threshing mill passed through the district last week, threshing some grass stacks and a few oat stacks which had been got in during breaks in the wet period. The results from the threshing were of poor quality compared with last season’s seed. P.W.M.U. Mrs Thomson presided over an attendance of 20 members at the first meeting of the year of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union held in the church. After the usual opening, an interesting account of the last conference was given by Mesdames Fairweather and Henderson. A solo was sung by Mrs J. Keast.

Henderson supervised the card tables. Music for the dance was supplied by Mrs H. Mills and Miss I. Henderson (piano) and Mr B. Dawson (accordion). Mr J. Henderson was master of ceremonies.
