ON RIVERTON TRACKS

YESTERDAY’S WORK NORTHERN HORSES TAKE PART (By Stopwatch) The course proper at Riverton was made available for fast work yesterday morning, when the trestles were about 15 feet out. Good Use was made of the main course by local and visiting trainers, and several good trials were seen. The weather was fine, and the track, which is carrying a good sole of grass, provided good going. There was a heavy dew early, but this disappeared as the morning progressed. The steeplechase course will be open for schooling on Wednesday and Thursday of next week. A. M. McKay arrived from Wingatui on Wednesday evening with Invadere, New Note and Octane. All three were exercised on the tracks yesterday morning. Ashaway (Horne) was sent over a mile and a-quarter, covering the journey in 2min 23 3-ssec, the last mile in Imin 56sec and the last six furlongs in Imin 22sec. The Balboa gelding looks particularly well and came home over the last three furlongs in solid style. Panocha (B. Shand) was sent a round of the schooling’fences, and experienced little difficulty in accomplishing this task.

Jumping off from the mile post, Jack Ahoy (H. Phillips) and King Willow (Horne) covered five furlongs in Imin 6sec, the first four furlongs in 53sec. King Willow was always in front and proved too good for his mate, who appears to be off colour. Verdure (L. Perkins) was sent over six furlongs on her own, covering the first three in 39 2-ssec, and completing the journey in Imin 21 2-ssec—the last half in 56sec. She was not troubled by the going but got her tongue oyer the bit and was stopping at the finish. Royal Saxon (Shand) completed a round of the schooling fences in Imin 7Jsec. He jumped cleanly throughout, with the exception of the first of the brush double, which he flattened. Blazon and Royston covered a mile and a-quarter in 2min 24 l-ssec, the last mile in Imin 57 2-ssec. Royston who headed his companion by a gooc length, was galloping very resolutely at the end of the journey. He appears to have improved a good deal. ' An interesting trial was that between Rodeur and Wild Career. The latter jumped off at the seven furlong peg, and was joined by Rodeur at the six, the pair completing the journey in Imin 20sec. Wild Career had to be shaken up over the last piece, but Rodeur was always doing her .work within herself. It was a good effort on the part of both. Beam Improves

Smoko (Perkins), Beam (Home) and Seafox (Dooley) were sent over a mile, covering the first quarter in 27 3-ssec, half in 53 2-ssec, and the full journey in Imin 51 3-ssee. Beam went to the front early and while the other pair soon closed up, Beam came on again to head Smoko by a length, with Seafox tailing off. The last half was covered in 54 3-ssec. This was one of the best gallops of the morning. Recent work had shown Beam to have been off colour,'and this was her best effort for some time. Smoko, who is in excellent order gave a solid showing, while Seafox was always in the firing line for seven furlongs. Recent racing appears to have improved him. Red Lance was sent a round of the schooling fences, giving an effortless display, although he took off rather close to the final fence. Later with J. Dooley up he was associated in a mile bout with Royal Limond (Phillips) which took . 2min. Red Lance just shaded his companion at the post. Royal Limond strips very well. Bow Street (Phillips), Vallock (Dooley), Baitruin and Burwood went out to run five furlongs together. Burwood broke away on his own and he covered the distance in Imin 7Jsec. Bow Street, Vallock and Baitruin set off together, completing the task in Imin 5 3-ssec. Bow Street was first to the wire by a good length from Vallock, who was under a hold at the finish. Baitruin tailed off. Vallock, who is a very promising novice, could have done better. Ardmayle (Voight) shaded Johnny (Dent! at the end of six furlongs, run in Imin 22sec, the first two in 27sec and three in 40 3-ssec. Barley Almond Well Bay Duke (Cook), Barley Almond and Trumpet Blast (Dooley) were sent over six furlongs, which they completed in Imin 19sec, the first three in 38 3-ssec, setting the main for the distance for the morning. Barley Almond and Bay Duke finished on terms, while Trumpet Blast tailed off. It was an attractive effort on Barley Almond’s part. The latter appears to be very well at present Bay Duke put plenty of dash into his work.

Cintilla (Phillips) jumped off from the mile post and was joined by Ramana and Bora (Dooley) at the sixfurlong peg. Cintilla ran the mile in Imin 53sec, the last six in Imin 20sec. Cintilla held command at the finish from Ramana who showed plenty of grit, while Hora did not appear to be bustled.

Niggerhead was sent a mile on his own. He ran the first half in 56sec and the journey in Imin 52sec, the last half also taking 56sec. He appeared to appreciate the going. McHeath (Dooley) and Wall Street galloped a mile in Imin 53 2-ssec, the first three in 44 3-ssec, the half in 57 l-ssec and the concluding half in 56 l-ssec. Wall Street shaded McHeath at the wire, but at the same time McHeath was wide out all the way. Wall Street galloped very resolutely. McHeath was reported to be sore afterwards. He was in trouble on the journey to Riverton. P. T. Hogan (Washdyke) arrived yesterday morning with Double Gift, Admiral Drake, Made Money and Dr Duthie, while F. Trilford (Washdyke) arrived with Santoft and Rebel Mate.

F. Shaw was expected to reach Riverton yesterday with Viking, Valantua, Brilliant Boa, Araboa, Te Rangi and Adina.
