ENGLISHMEN DRAW IN VICTORIA GOOD COUNTRY BATSMEN (Received March 7, 6.30 p.m.) BEN ALLA (Victoria), March 7. Rain prevented play,-until 2 p.m. on the second and last day of the cricket match between England and the Country League, and the match was drawn. .... The country team closed its innings at the tea adjournment to allow England to bat again. Davidson, a left-hander with _ a strong defence, scored mostly with snicks and glances. He batted for 146 minutes. gave a strong and attractive exhibition of free hitting, scoring two sixes and three fours. J. M. Sims and W. Copson were the best bowlers, but G. O. B. Allen, coming on late, had the best average. Little enterprise was shown when England batted again. R. E. S. Wyatt was sound, and H. Verity concentrated on defence; he was deadly slow. He scored 22 singles and one four in 77 minutes. M. Leyland attacked the bowling strongly for 32 minutes; he hit five fours. . . The country team in its first innings made 147 for eight wickets declared (Davidson retired 52, Heavey 30, Walker 29). Allen took two wickets for five runs, and Sims two for 34. England in its second innings made 118 for six wickets (Leyland not out 33, Wyatt 30, Verity 24, Worthington not out 14). McDonald took three wickets for 39 and Bennetts two for 17. LOCAL MATCHES POSTPONED Wet weather on Saturday caused another postponement of the Southland Cricket Association’s grade competition matches. In the first grade championship a series had been started the previous week. Marist had established a first-innings lead against Union and therefore will score a two-point win. Although Invercargill was in a very bad position against Old Boys, it still had one wicket to fall in the first innings, so that that match was drawn. Appleby won by default from High School. ■
