TENNIS

MATAURA VALLEY ASSOCIATION LAST WEEK’S GAMES The matches under the auspices of the Mataura Valley Tennis Association were continued last week and several postponed matches were also played. The results for the most part have been a series of surprises—Ota Creek’s easy win over Wyndham C, the defeat of Mimihau by Wyndham C, and Menzies Ferry’s poor showing against Brydone. It is almost unbelievable that a team could display such variable form on two successive evenings as did Wyndham C. Against Ota Creek its play was really mediocre —due, no doubt, to lack of practice because of the courts being under water during the recent floods. But against Mimihau the following night, the Wyndham C team seemed to strike form and scored a well-de-served, though totally unexpected, win. OTA CREEK v. WYNDHAM C Playing at Wyndham, the home C team suffered its heaviest defeat of the season at the hands of Ota Creek. Although Ota Creek have improved immensely since the beginning of the season, it was chiefly due to Wyndham’s poor form that Ota Creek owed its success. Wyndham’s team was not up to its full strength either in men or in women, and it could secure only one set, 25 games to Ota Creek’s 7 sets, 46 games. In the following detailed results, Wyndham names appear first:— Men’s Doubles.—J. Johnstone and H. Mackley lost to H. and M. Dillon, 2—6; A. Malcolmson and A. Woodward lost to H. Baynes and O. Dillon, 2—6. Women’s Doubles.—Miss M. Dynes and Mrs N. J. Jefferis lost to Misses M. Townley and J. McDonald, 4—6; Mesdames W. Horne and N. J. Jefferis beat Misses. J. Baynes and M. Byers, Mixed Doubles.—J. Johnstone and Miss M. Dynes lost to H. Dillon and Miss M. Townley, 4—6;. H. Mackley and Mrs N. J. Jefferis lost to M. Dillon and Miss J. McDonald, 3—6; A. Malcolmson and Mrs N. J. Jefferis lost to H. Baynes and Miss J. Baynes, 2—6; A. Woodward and Mrs W. Horne lost to 0. Dillon and Miss M. Byers 2—6. WYNDHAM C v. MLMIHAU This postponed match, which was played on the Wyndham club’s courts, was very evenly contested throughout, and the final result hung on the top men’s doubles, which was concluded in a very poor light. After a close set, Wyndham C gained the victory, J. Johnstone and J. Robertson defeating D. Home and W. Smith, 6—4. Wyndham secured' 5 sets, 35 games and Mimihau 3 sets, 33 games. In the following detailed scores, the Wyndham players are mentioned first:— i Men’s Doubles.—J. Johnstone and J. j Robertson beat D Home and W. | Smith, 6—4; H. Mackley and A. Mal- | colmson beat T. Mcßride and J. Arnott, Women’s Doubles.—Miss M. Dynes and Mrs N. J. Jefferis lost to Misses A. McLaren and E. Smith, o—6; Miss S. Strang and Mrs W. Horne beat Misses W. Smith and B. McLaren, 6—l. Mixed Doubles.—J. Johnstone and Miss M Dynes lost to D. Horne and Miss A. McLaren, 5—6; J. Robertson and Mrs N. J. Jefferis lost to W. Smith and Miss E. Smith, o—6; A. Malcolmson and Miss A. Strang beat T. McBride and Miss W. Smith, 6—5; H. Mackley and Mrs W. Horne beat J. Arnott and Miss B. McLaren, 6—l. i MENZIES FERRY v. BRYDONE j Another unexpected result was the ] defeat of Menzies Ferry by the Brydone team, which has not had many sue- 1 cesses this year. The match was played on the Brydone club’s courts, and the ! home team won by 4 sets, 39 games to 4 sets, 36 games. The heavy defeat 1 of J. Matheson and W. Hill by S. N. J Kirker and G. Wyeth gave Brydone , just the few games lead it required to ■ win. Brydone names appear first in the following detailed scores:— ‘ Men’s Doubles.—S. N. Kirker and G. Wyeth beat J. Matheson and W. Hill, 1 6—l; A. Campbell and H. Mawdsley ' lost to V. B. Foxon and W. Baird, 3—6. Women’s Doubles.—Miss M. Drys- * dale and Mrs Mawdsley lost to Misses , N. Hamilton and J. Laurie, 4—6; Misses , J. Bagrie and C. Hay beat Mrs T. Fen- ’ ton and Miss N. Crosbie, 6—2.

Mixed Doubles.—S. N. Kirker and Miss M. Drysdale beat J. Matheson and Miss N. Hamilton, 6 —4; G. Wyeth and Mrs Mawdsley beat W. Hill and Miss J. Laurie, 6—5; A. Campbell and Miss J. Bagrie lost to V. B. Foxon and Mrs T. Fenton, 4—6; H. Mawdsley. and Miss C. Hay lost to W. Baird and Miss N. Crosbie, 4—6.

SEAWARD DOWNS v. WYNDHAM D Although not seriously troubled to win against a very weak Wyndham D team, the Seaward Downs players gave a good account of themselves and should trouble Wyndham C when the two meet next week. The match took place on the Seaward Downs club’s courts in very unpleasant weather conditions, showers of rain falling at frequent intervals. In the following detailed scores, Seaward Downs players are mentioned first:—

Men’s Doubles.—W. Dunlop and J, I Pow beat E. Pankhurst and W. L. ' Stewart, 6 —o; R. Drysdale and H. Baxter beat G. Douglas and B. H. Benneworth, 5—2. Women’s Doubles.—Misses J. Palmer and I. Drysdale beat Misses S. Strang and N. Rice, s—o; Misses U. Crosbie and I. Morton beat Misses C. Traynor and G. Gaw, s—o. Mixed Doubles.—W. Dunlop and Miss J. Palmer beat E. Pankhurst and Miss S. Strang, 5—2; J. Pow and Miss I. Drysdale beat W. L. Stewart and Miss N. Rice, s—l; R. Drysdale and Miss M. Crosbie lost to G. Douglas and Miss C. Traynor, 2—5; H. Baxter and Miss I. Morton beat B. H. Benneworth and Miss G. Gaw, 5—2.

Seaward Downs 7 sets, 38 games, Wyndham D 1 set, 12 games. MIMIHAU v. TUTURAU In a postponed match played on the Mimihau courts, the home team proved too strong for Tuturau, winning by 6 sets, 39 games to 2 sets, 17 games. L. G. Townsend, the ex-Southland representative, made his first appearance in a club match this season, and won both' games in which he appeared quite easily. The Mimihau women were definitely .superior to their opponents, who could not win a set. Table of Points With only one more round of competition matches to be played, it now appears quite definite that the cup will be won either by Wyndham C or Mimihau. Wyndham have yet to play two fairly strong teams in Seaward Downs and Menzies Ferry, while Mimihau have only to play Wyndham D. But as Wyndham has a two-point lead, due to its defeat of Mimihau, it is the most fancied team, although it will be weaker than usual in its re-

maining matches. The table of points at present is as follows:—

FIXTURES POSTPONED , All A and C grade tennis competition fixtures and the Town-Central and Town-West Otago fixtures were postponed on Saturday because of heavy rain. The Southland Lawn Tennis Association decided at midday to postpone the competition fixtures and the Town-Central fixture, but as favourable weather reports had been received the other Town team travelled to Waikaka. Rain began to fall soon after the team arrived there, however, and that fixture also had to be postponed. ______________
