TROTTING IN THE MUD

Invercargill Club’s Meeting HAROLD GUY WINS MAIN EVENT The Invercargill Trotting Club s meeting concluded on Saturday under probably the worst conditions the club has ever experienced. Rain fell all the afternoon and the track quickly cut up. It was a quagmire late in the afternoon and drivers and horses had a most unenviable time. It was almost impossible to recognize some of the drivers on their return to the birdcage. Naturally the attendance suffered and both the gate and the totalizator returns showed decreases. . The management of the meeting left nothing to be desired and the Programme was concluded up to time. Mr T. Marshall again did fine work -as The' gate returns amounted to £268 14/- compared with £292 12/6 last year, a decrease of £23 18/6. The total for the meeting was £458 3/b compared with £525 5/-, a decrease ot £64 1/6. „ ± , The totalizator returns on Saturday amounted to £9923 compared with £10,543 10/-. The total for the meeting was £18,891 compared with £l9,dd<i 10/-, a decrease of £441 10/-. The results were as follows: — TRIAL HANDICAP, £llO, second £l5, third £7 10/-. RACING REVIEWED THE TRIAL HANDICAP The public started off badly, the favourites failing to fill a place. The best backed in the Trial Handicap were Ghandi (£l6l 10/- and £99 10/-), Prince Charles (£67 10/- and £B7 10/) and the Budge-Voloma bracket (£47 and £64 10/-)’. Prince Charles, Ochiltree, Aqua Bond and the coupled pair were badly away, Ghandi being first to show from Seascape, Reconnoitre and Sunny Drive. Racing past the stands Reconnoitre was showing from Ghandi, Seascape, Sunny Drive, Debenture and Happy Morn. There was little change going into the back, but at the five furlongs Reconnoitre led Ghandi, Seascape, Sunny Drive, Happy Morn and Debenture. Ghandi took charge half a mile from home and led Sunny Drive, Reconnoitre, Seascape and Direct Bell across the top. It was a good race home, but Sunny Drive finished best to beat Direct Bell by half a length. Seascape was half a length away, followed by Debenture, Ghandi, Prince Charles and Dazzling Sun. Sunny Drive improved on recent form. He found the going to. his liking and won well. Direct Bell is a likely early winner. Seascape was always handy, and others to shape well were Debenture and Reconnoitre. Ghandi failed to see it out. Murihiku Handicap Swift Guy (£BB 10/- and £81), Blue Logan (£7B 10/- and £93 10/-) and Imperial Wave (£3O 10/- and £53) were best backed for the Murihiku Handicap and Blue Logan won after an interesting contest.

Swift Guy, Floating Nelson, Minstrel and Ballet Boy broke early. Ahikiwi, Betty Drusus, Blue Logan and Bob Wilkes was the order when they had settled down, but Ahikiwi brpke at the mile post and Betty Drusus went on in the lead from Blue Logan, Bob Wilkes and Hatrack, the field being well strung out. At the turn Betty Drusus was a length clear of Blue Logan and a gap of ten lengths to Beatrice Bingen, Bob Wilkes and Hatrack. Blue Logan challenged Betty Drusus in the straight, but broke. He was soon down again, however, and ridden right out he beat the breaking Betty Drusus by a length. Beatrice Bingen was six lengths away, followed by Appomatox and Imperial Wave. It was a very popular win for the veteran N. Gatley and he received a fine reception. Betty Drusus is a good trotter and more will be heard of her. It was, however, a poor race apart from the two leaders. Jellicoe Handicap The Jellicoe Handicap was run in a shower and the faces of the drivers were hardly recognizable for mud. The best backed were Waipahi (£l4l and £97), Eddie Tolan (£lO2 and £92) and Happiness (£B5 10/- and £95 10/-). At the start Waipahi, Happiness and Nell Grattan were badly away and Suncup quickly opened up a gap from Embark, Erin’s Star and Loyal Sun. Racing past the stands Suncup was three lengths clear from Erin’s Star, Embark, Loyal Sun and Erin’s Chief. The order changed very little, but across the top Sun cup was only a length ahead of Erin’s Star, Embark, Loyal Sun and Erin’s Chief. This five grouped at the straight entrance and a fine finish took place. Loyal Sun finished best and beat Erin’s Star by threequarters of a length. Erin’s Chief was a length and a-half away, followed by Suncup and Embark. Loyal Sun was driven a well-judged race and his finishing run was a solid one. Erin’s Star had every chance and so did Erin’s Chief. Suncup stopped in the straight, but it would perhaps be unfair tp condemn any horse for failing under the circumstances. The track by this time was well cut up.

Southland Handicap Harold Guy won the Southland Handicap well after a good race in the mud. Moko Child (£153 10/- and £152 10/-), Harold Guy (£146 and £144) and Silver Guy (£lll 10/- and £109) were the best backed. Vologda broke up at the start, Blue Spark tangled and Marsceres was interfered with. Silver Guy, Tawny and Harold Guy made the running early and with half a mile covered Silver Guy was in charge', from Moko Child, Tawny, Harold Guy and Erin’s Fair. Night Voyage then made a fast run and through the straight the first time she had charge from Moko Child, Silver Guy, Erin’s Fair, Harold Guy and Belle Grattan. The order changed little until three furlongs from home. Here Silver Guy rushed to the front from Moko Child, then came Belle Grattan, Harold Guy and Night Voyage. Moko Child showed out coming to the straight from Silver Guy, Harold Guy, Belle Grattan (who went to a tangle) ana Night Voyage. Moko Child broke at the distance and in a keen finish Harold Guy beat Silver Guy by a length and a-quarter. Belle Grattan was a similar distance away, followed by Moko Child and Vologda. Harold Guy went a fine race and came home full of running. It was a good performance. Silver Guy was always handy and so was Belle Grattan. Moko Child had every chance. Tawny and Erin’s Fair failed to see it out and so did Night Voyage. Coldstream Handicap A big dividend was hoisted when Walter Gay narrowly beat Vinola in the Coldstream Handicap. TJe besj backed were Carver Doone (£196 and £141), St.'Lyria (£lO6 and £99)and College Bay (£139 10/- and £llB 10 Fortune King and College Boy were badly away and Master Potts, Direct Thorpe and Walter Gay began best from Sinbad. When the stands were reached Walter Gay had taken charge from Direct Thorpe, Master Potts and Vinola, with St. Lyria next At the mile post Jean Dewey joined Walter Gav and they were followed by. Master Potts and Vinola, with St. Lyria next. The field was well strung out down the back with Walter Gay and Jean Dewey clear from Vinbla, St. Lyria ana Master Potts. Jean Dewey had had enough three furlongs from home and into the straight Walter Gay and Vinola were five lengths clear of St. Lyria, Jean Dewey and Carver Doone. A great, finish saw Walter Gay outstay Vinola and beat him by a head. Carver Doone was ten lengths away, followed by Jean Dewey, Pola Negri and Master Walter Gay was well ridden and stayed on in the mud. The win was deserved. Vinola went a fine race also, but nothing else had a chance over the final stages. Jean Dewey, St. Lyria and Sinbad among others failed to stay. Tiie favourite did not r 'o well in the early stages, but ran past a beaten lot for third. Waikiwi Handicap The coupled Lee Boy and Golden Bingen were made favourites for the Waikiwi Handicap and the former pulled his admirers through easily, lhe bracketed pair had £lOO and £lO5 10/on their chances, Blue Logan (£44 ana £62 10/-) and Winnow (£3l and £53). Winnow, Native Kowhai and Blue Blood broke at the start. The colours were difficult to pick up. Edwin Bingen opened up a gap early from Beatrice Bingen, Betty Drusus and Annie Moko. The competitors found the heavy track difficult to handle and were soon well strung out. At the stands Edwin Bingen was still clear from Beatrice Bingen, Jean Ballm, Betty Drusus, Lee Boy and Winnow. Racing down the back Beatrice Bingen headed a bunch comprised of Golden Bingen, Jean Baffin, Lee Boy and Edwin Bingen. At the turn Lee Boy took charge and Golden Bingen went to a break. Lee Boy was three lengths clear across the top from Betty Drusus. Beatrice Bingen and Golden. Bingen. Betty Drusus broke in the straight and Lee Boy came on to beat her by a length and a-half. Beatrice Bingen was a neck away, followed, at a big interval by Blue Logan and Appomatox. Lee Boy trotted steadily all the way and won well. Betty Drusus gave a good account of herself, but broke under pressure. Beatrice Bingen was always handy, but the rest could not handle the going. Visitors’ Handicap

Coherto proved himself a good horse when he won the Visitors’ Handicap. The best backed were Overproof (£142 10/-and £l3BlO/-), Coherto (£9l 10/and £99) and Frisco Silk (£67 and £76). College Boy broke after the start and the first prominent were Mishap, Picotee and Overproof. At the stands Picotee was showing from Mishap, Chief Drusus and Guywin. Coherto moved up fast going to the back and five furlongs from home Coherto was showing from Mishap, Overproof and Guywin. Coherto broke half a mile from home and Overproof went to the front from Guywin, Mishap and Coherto. The latter again made a fast run, but tangled again at the two furlongs. Overproof led into the straight from Guy win. Coherto and Mishap. A great race home resulted in Coherto getting up to beat Overproof by a neck. Mishap was half a length away, then Guywin and Chief Drusus. Coherto is no doubt a very fine three-year-old and, despite three breaks on the journey, he won. Overproof stayed on well and so did Mishap and Guywin, but the rest were outclassed. Au Revoir Handicap

Vologda at a good price won the Au Revoir Handicap, for which Tawny, Belle Grattan and Gold Salute were scratched. Weary Voyage (£254 and £116), Guy Mauritius (£167 and £126) and Harold Wrack (£134 10/- and £9l 10/-) were the best supported. Weary Voyage lost all chance at the start and Harold Wrack was slow to move off. Racing over the crossing turning out of the straight Guy Mauritius, who had taken charge, broke, ran wide, and carried out Vologda and Harold Wrack. This enabled Leitrim to get through on the rails and he ran to the front to lead into the back from Erin’s Boy, Harold Wrack and Vologda. Half a mile from home Leitrim still had charge from Erin’s Boy, Vologda and Harold Wrack, who was now finding the going too heavy. Leitrim led to the straight a length and a-half clear of Vologda, then coming Guy Mauritius and Erin’s Boy. Vologda did best in the Irun home to beat Leitrim by two lengths. Erin’s Boy was twelve lengths away, well 'clear of Guy Mauritius and Weary Voyage. ...... _ There were only two in it at the tinish and Vologda finished the best in the mud. Leitrim, however, went a fine race. Tire rest were outclassed, but Guy Mauritius would have been closer up but for his early mistake. WELLINGTON R.C. REHANDICAPS ANNOUNCED.
