MAINLY FAIR TO FINE (Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, March 4. Following is the. Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland: — Moderate to strong southerly winds. Weather mainly fair to fine, but some passing showers at times on the coast, and some isolated local rains inland. Temperatures cold, with some frosts. Seas rather rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather mainly fair to fine in western districts, elsewhere changeable with occasional passing showers, especially between Cook Strait and the East Cape. Temperatures cold, with inland frosts in the South Island.

General Situation.—A deep depression is at present centred near the Chatham Islands, while an intense anti-cyclone covers Eastern Australia, and extends across the Tasman. Winds. —Moderate to strong southerly, reaching gale force at times in exposed positions, especially on the east coast and about Cook Strait. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rough north of Farewell Spit and south of East Cape; elsewhere moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea, moderate to strong, but decreasing, southerly winds. Seas moderate to rather rough. The weather was fine and cool. In Invercargill yesterday. At 1 o’clock this morning the weather was fine and calm. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows:— This morning (rising) 29.86 in. Thursday 29.82 in. Wednesday 29.78 in.
