Gore FAT LAMB DRAFTS

SOME GOOD RETURNS Fat lamb drafts in Eastern Southland for the current season, are killing quite up to expectations in spite of the adverse weather conditions. With a continuation of wet weather almost since, tile beginning of December last, when more settled weather conditions are expected, grass has become too rank, and as a result lacked the necessary sunshine to give it that quality for finishing off lambs. In spite of this, however, lambs have been coming forward in plentiful supplies to all. Southland freezing works, and this is more or less confirmed by a report from Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., Gore, concerning drafts from the properties of Messrs A. Herron and F. O’Hagen, of Pukerau. Mr Herron’s draft comprised 1127 lambs from a. total of 1300, which represents the progeny of 1000 ewes. This line when railed to the Ocean Beach Freezing Co.’s’works, Bluff for slaughter returned the outstanding average of 37.891 b with a total absence of seconds. Mr O’Hagen’s line was 567 lambs from 1200 ,ewes, and returned the yery fine average '■ of 38.701 b. Mr Herron’s annual drafts since adopting the practice of topdressing'on an extensive scale, coupled with the use of.Southdown rams, makes interesting reading. They are as follows, and apply to first draft milk lambs in each case:—

For the year 1932, 480; 1933, 575; 1934, 750; 1935, 960; 1936, 1023; 1937, 1127, and with the increase in numbers each year the weight and quality generally has increased also. Mr O’Hagen’s chances for a big draft this season were marred by the contraction by his eWes of the prevalent sheep disease which took toll of a large total of ewes throughout Eastern Southland this season, he having got away 980 off the mothers last season.
