THE MARAMA

Arrival From Melbourne THE PASSENGER LIST When the Union Steam Ship Company’s Marama berthed at Bluff at 8 o’clock yesterday morning she carried nearly 400 passengers—the biggest number for any trip this season. The ship was scheduled to berth at 7 o’clock, but the heavy weather made this impossible. The tourists’ introduction to Bluff—the “gateway to Southland”—was not a happy one. Heavy, misty rain shrouded the port and only a few of the hardier spirits among the passengers appeared on the deck as the ship drew alongside the wharf.

Bad weather also to some extent marred the crossing from Melbourne, misty rain similar to that of yesterday morning falling for the last 30 hours of the voyage. The Marama arrived at Milford Sound at 11 o’clock on Sunday morning. Heavy rain was falling at the time, but the weather detracted little from the charms of the sound. “The mountain tops were wreathed in fog,” one of the passengers told The Southland Tunes, “but for 200 feet down, mountain and bush were cut at frequent intervals by rushing waterfalls. I have seen the placid beauty of Milford Sound in fine weather, and have been charmed by it; but when that beauty is ruffled by the weather the sound takes on a new loveliness.” At Milford Sound 29 passengers disembarked—the greatest number that has yet left the Marama to take to the world-famous Milford Track. The following passengers disembarked at Bluff:— Mr and Mrs W. H. Boyes, Dr J. L. Blakie, Flight Lieutenant C. D. Candy, Miss M. Clarke, Mr O. Driscoll, Miss C. Farr, Mrs V. M. and Mr D.
