McKenzie, Mains O’Blair. Miss L McDonald, Tuatapere. spent last week-end in Invercargill with her parents. Miss Diana Abraham arrived from Dunedin, last evening to be the guest of Mrs Denniston Cuthbertson, Duke street. Mr and Mrs Peter Lewis, of England, who are visiting New Zealand, arrived in Invercargill yesterday. They will spend Christmas as the guests of Mrs Lewis’s sister-in-law, Mrs J. W. P. Thomson, Stewart Island. Mrs Denniston Cuthbertson, Duke street, and Miss Barbara Cuthbertson go tomorrow to their house at the Rocks, Riverton, for the holidays. They will be accompanied by Miss Abraham, of Dunedin.

The engagement is announced of Willamina, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. H. Swale, Grace street, Invercargill, to John Patterson, son of Mrs Ramsay and the late Mr W. D. Ramsay, Baird street, Lindisfarne. Miss A. L. Humphreys, who has been on the staff of the Waihopai school for the past two years and is now leaving to take up a new position, was farewelled by her colleagues at the school yesterday morning. She was presented with a fountain pen by the head master, Mr A. Thomson, who referred to her capabilities as a teacher. Yesterday afternoon the children of the Gladstone kindergarten, under the direction of Miss Girdler, held their Christmas break-up ceremony. The function was held out of doors and although impromptu was most pleasing. The children performed a number of items before a large audience of parents and friends. Father Christmas was present and presented each child with a gift. The children also had gifts, which they had made during the year, for their parents. On behalf of the parents and visitors, Mr A. H. Robins briefly congratulated Miss Girdler and her assistants on their work with the children.

On Monday evening the Otahuti Tennis Club held a dance. Music was supplied by Mr A. McDonald, and Mr J. Beggs was mastei- of ceremonies. Those present included Mr and Mrs R. Hyde, Mi- and Mrs G. Leith, Mr and Mrs N. Garden; Misses C. Beggs, M. Hill, M. Robertson, M. McDonald, M. Thomson, J. Connor, F. Donald, L. Saunders, G. Cowan, J. Turner (Drummond), V. and D, Cowan; Messrs H. Cowan, B. Miss Mary Cushen, who has been an assistant teacher at the North Invercargill school for the past three and ahalf years, and who has received an appointment at the Forbury school, Dunedin, was farewelled yesterday morning by the staff and the headmaster, Mr J. A. Cushen. In presenting her with a handbag, Mr Cushen referred to the good work she had done while at North School and said he was sorry indeed that she would not be continuing as a member of the staff. He wished her success in her new sphere. Miss Watson (infant mistress) and Mr J. Welsh (first assistant) spoke of the harmony that existed between all members of the staff.

A most successful social was held in the Mokotua Tennis Club’s pavilion, when the Mokotua Boxing Club, together with a large number of residents of the district, met to honour Mr Robert Dick, who was recently married. The evening was spent in dancing, music being supplied by Messrs S. Mincrier, P. Clearwater, W. J. Fraser, W. Matthews and J. Reynolds. During the supper adjournment, the chairman, Mr C. Selby, presented Mr Dick with an oak chiming clock, expressing the Wish that Mr and Mrs Dick would enjoy its use during a long and happy lifetime. He referred to Mr Dick’s many good qualities, his splendid services as instructor to the Boxing Club and his popularity among all sections of the community. Mr Dick replied on behalf of his wife and himself.

A good attendance was present in Lawson’s Hall, Tuatapere, on Monday evening, the occasion being a farewell social given in honour of Miss Wilson, who has been district Plunket nurse for the past 13 years. During the evening Miss Wilson was presented with a bouquet of roses made by Mrs T. Ward and presented on behalf of the Plunket Society, by the society’s first secretary, Mrs J. A. Mangan. The presentation of a rosewood dinner wagon, an electric kettle and a handembroidered Swiss traycloth was made on behalf of friends and members of the society by Mrs C. Duncan, the first president. Mrs Duncan spoke of the progress of the society in Tuatapere and the esteem in which the guest of the evening was held. Other speakers, who endorsed Mrs Duncan’s remarks, were Mrs Cottam (president), Mrs Catto (secretary), Mesdames S. Thomas, C. F. Bruce, George McLeod and T. Ward. Dr Dodds replied on behalf of Miss Wilson. Competitions were arranged by Mrs Bruce, the winners being Misses Wilson, Hannan and E. Payne and Mrs V. Feaver. During the evening songs were sung by Mrs J. Tuffrey. The music was supplied by Mrs F. Kilkelly, Misses W. Hannan and F. Mangan.

On Saturday evening the amateur radio transmitters of Southland gathered at the Rosewood Lounge to bid farewell to Mr A. Hyndman, one of the foundation members of the branch, who is leaving to take up a position in England with Marconi Laboratories. A pleasant evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with musical items given by Mrs H. Sutton, Miss M. Searle, Miss Babette Lister and Mr H. Sutton. During supper a number of toasts were honoured and tlie opportunity was taken to present Mr Hyndman with a fountain pen and a pencil suitably inscribed. The club wished him the very best of luck and success. Those present were: Mr and Mrs F.i Hazlett, Mr and Mrs H. Sutton, Mr and Mrs Strachan (Gore), Mr and Mrs W. Baird; Misses T. Mark (Gore), O.
