DEATH FROM INJURIES (United Press Association) Dannevirke, December 15, The death occurred .in the Dannovirke Public Hospital this morning of Robert Wright, aged 66, relieving officer in charge in the Department of Agriculture at Dannevirke, who when crossing a road became involved in a collision with a car at Woodville on Saturday, having his left leg and some ribs broken, besides suffering severe shock. He was previously chief inspector of stock in Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough, Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay. He retired on superannuation two years ago. SWIMMER DIES UNDER-WATER (United Press Association) Blenheim, December 15Death overtook Edward Henry Alger, aged 29, a single man employed in the Department of Agriculture as a clerk, while he was engaged in under-water swimming at the municipal baths last night. Alger, who was recognized as a good swimmer, had completed a distance of over 50 yards without coming to the surface, when it was discovered that something had gone wrong with him. A bystander jumped in, fully clothed, and quickly recovered the body, but artificial respiration was unsuccessful. It is believed that death was due to heart failure, as the result of the strain of the effort under-water. His parents reside in Stratford. KILLED BY EXPLOSION OF GELIGNITE (United Press Association) Rotorua, December 15. A young man, Eldred Lyle, aged 22, was killed instantly by a premature explosion of a charge of gelignite, with which he was working this afternoon in a quarry belonging to the National Timber Company, at Ngongotaha. Lyle had bored a nole about 70 feet up the face of the quarry and was placing the charge in it when the gelignite exploded. Lyle was killed instantly, his body being terribly mutilated. PLUMBER FALLS THROUGH SKYLIGHT (United Tress Association) Wellington, December 15. Falling 20ft through a skylight on the roof of the Wairarapa Farmers’ Cooperative Association’s wool store on Thorndon Quay at 3.30 p.m. today, James Dickinson, single, aged 25, a plumber, received severe head injuries which caused his death some hours later in hospital. Dickinson was working with others on the spoutings. His companion heard the sound of glass breaking and saw Dickinson in the act of falling through the skylight on to the floor below. The injured man was unconscious when picked up. He did not rally. . Dickinson was to be married at Christmas. INQUEST ON ADVERTISING MANAGER (United Press Association) Taumarunui, December 15. The adjourned inquest on Herbert Kenneth Harre, an advertising manager, of Wellington, whose body was found mangled on the main trunk line on November 21, was held today. He had been in ill-health and was subject to sudden heart attacks. Evidence was given about the discovery of the remains and a verdict was returned that Harre met his death by being run over by a train near Kakahi, there being no evidence to show how he fell from the train.
