BIG YARDINGS
Stock Market At Lorneville MARKED EASING .IN FAT SHEEP AND CATTLE Yardings of all classes of stock were heavy at Lorneville yesterday with a consequent easing in values for fat sheep and cattle. Fat pigs and store sheep sold briskly, but interest waned noticeably in the fat sheep sale and ewes were about 2/- a head cheaper all through and wethers about 1/6 a head below the values of the last sale a fortnight ago. It was an erratic market and passings were frequent towards the end of the sale. The beef yarding was much too big for local requirements. There was practically no representation of country butchers and competition was not keen. Values for good quality cattle eased by at least £1 a head and the drop was bigger for medium and poorer quality cattle. The pig entry was a good one, fats holding their value and stores easing slightly. The yardings yesterday and those of the last sale were as follows:— Dec. 15. Dec. 1. Fat cattle 320 310 Store cattle 156 185 Fat sheep 1262 862 Store sheep 967 767 Yesterday’s offerings included 69 fat pigs, 122 store pigs, 19 dairy cows, 10 vealers. 17 bulls and 278 fat lambs. Fat sheep.—The unusually big yarding of fat sheep was of fairly good quality. The sale opened with wethers selling at rates firm on those of the last sale, but with ewes about 2/- a head cheaper. The easing tendency developed as the sale t regressed and there was a falling away in values of wethers of about 1/6 a head, while ewes were steady 2/- cheaper. The sale was yery slack towards the close and passings were frequent. Prime quality shorn wethers sold at from 27/- to 29/-, good quality from 25/3 to 26/-, and lightweights from 24/- to 24/9. Prime woolly ewes brought up to 25/-, fair quality from 20/- to 22/-, and lighter down to 15/-. Good quality shorn ewes brought from 17/- to 19/-, medium from 15/- to 16/-, and unfinished from 13/- to 14/-. Fat lambs.—There was fairly good quality in the fat lamb pens, also, and the competition of export buyers and butchers resulted in a bright market. Heavy lambs brought from 28/- to 30/-, prime quality from 26/- to 27/-, medium from 24/6 to 25/6. and lightweights down to 22/-. Store sheep.—Ewes and lambs comprised the bulk of the yarding. The lambs were of good quality and the sale was a fairly brisk one. Values ranged from 17/- to 19/6, with poorer sorts bringing from 15/6 to 16/6. Store cattle.—There were not many straight lines in the yarding, which was dominated in point of numbers by empty cows, there being only two pens of steers of mixed colours. Two-year-old steers brought from £4 7/6 to £4 17/6, empty cows from £2 5/- to £3 9/-, and others down to £llO/-. Empty two-year-old heifers made up to £4 10/-, and yearling steers and heifers up to £2 7/6. Cows with calves at foot brought up to £3 5/-. Fat cattle.—There was a particularly big yarding of fat cattle which included some good quality bullocks, cows and heifers, although cows comprised about 60 per cent, of the offering. The entry was much too big for local requirements and in the almost total absence of country butchers, competition was not keen and values for good quality cattle eased by at least 20/- a head, while m'edium and poorer quality cattle were back even more. A number of truck lots on consignment were not even offered. Extra prime heavy bullocks brought up to £l3 7/6, prime quality from £lO 10/to £ll 15/-, good quality from £9 10/to £lO 5/-, medium from £8 10/- to £9 and lighter weights down to £7 10/-. Prime heavy cows sold at up to £B, prime quality from £6 15/- to £7 5/-, good quality from £5 15/- to £6 5/-, medium from £4 15/- to £5 5/-, and inferior from £3 to £3 15/-. Prime quality heifers brought up to £8 10/-, good quality from £7 to £7 15/-, medium from £6 to £6 10/-, and lighter weights from £5 5/- to £5 15/-.
Pigs.—The yarding of both fat and store pigs was a big one, and the bulk of the fat entry was of prime baconers and porkers. Competition for all classes was fairly keen and values were maintained. Good baconers brought from £3 to £3 15/- and porkers from £2 to £2 10/-. Store pigs were in demand, but the supply was rather too big for requirements and there was a slight easing in values. Good store pigs brought £1 15/- to £2 5/-, weaners from 18/- to 23/6, and smaller sorts from 15/- to 18/-. Several breeding sows were offered, but bidding for them was slow and good sows coming to profit were sold at from £2 to £3. A line of nine-weeks-old purebred Tamworths from Palmerston was offered and the sows brought 3|gns and the boars 3gns.
