AN APPLICATION REFUSED
COMMUNISTS SEEK TO JOIN LABOUR “JUDGED BY THEIR PAST RECORD” (United Press Association.) Christchurch, November 13. Efforts made by the Communist Party to join forces with the Labour Party with a view to establishing something in the nature of a “Popular Front” movement in the Dominion have ended in failure. The National president of the Labour Party, Mr Clyde Carr, M.P. for Timaru, who arrived from Wellington this morning, stated in an interview that a meeting of the National Executive of the Labour Party was held yesterday when application from the Communist Party for affiliation was refused. Mr Carr said that the Labour Party was not prepared to have anything to do with the Communists. It judged them by their past record and had no hesitation in turning down the application. Since the Labour Party secured the reins of government in the Dominion the Communist Party is understood to have lost a good deal of ground, Some time ago the Communists secured control of the unemployed workers’ movement in Christchurch, but they were unable to fill the various positions on the executive and it is understood that they later abandoned their task.
