Road To Mason’s Bay The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, has written to the secretary of the Southland League stating that he feels he would not be justified in requesting the Government to sanction a grant for the construction of a road from Half Moon Bay to Mason’s Beach, Stewart Island. The Minister mentioned that he proposed to visit the island at a suitable opportunity. The letter stated: “In a previous letter I-advised you that I was making inquiries into the possibility of forming a road from Half Moon Bay to Mason’s Beach on Stewart Island. An inspection has now been made of a route along which the proposed road would be constructed. The quantity of millable timber which would become readily accessible has been ascertained and I have also considered the developmental value of the land in this area. “I think it must be admitted that the prospects of any extensive successful development taking place on the island are not encouraging, and I am afraid I would not be justified in requesting the Government to sanction the expenditure of the comparatively large sum which would be necessary. I propose to visit the island at some suitable opportunity and I will then be pleased to discuss this matter further.”
