’ EASTERN SOUTHLAND NOTES

(By

“Slice.”)

A purely local rainstorm, passing over the hills and right above Gore, was the means of bringing all last week’s matches in that district to a sudden end. 0 ' Although the sun later did its best to make amends, the grass was too wet and players dispersed after afternoon tea. A light shower of rain interrupted ’ play for about half an hour at Wynd--5 ham and Mataura, but both fixtures were completed. 2 The A grade match between the two weakest teams in the competition, proved very even, each side having 8 sets. Mataura had a good surplus in 8 games, however, which decided the result. The Edendale men were definitely ; weaker than Mataura’s, especially the f last two, but the Edendale women, though much weaker than last year’s team, won four of the six matches. P. Welsh and W. Irvine both won nar- • orwly from J. Calder and Thorne 5 respectively. J. Calder, who is thor- ’ oughly experienced in match play, was a hard man to beat in the B grade competition and is quite capable of extending any of the top men in the A grade. E. Calder was too good for Mc- .’ Donald, while I. Haggit, whose steadiness is almost heartbreaking, had a ■ comfortable win from H. Hickey, 9—5. ■ Both of the men’s doubles went to Mataura, surprisingly enough. Welsh and Irvine are a pair to be reckoned with, but they met a better pair in J. Calder and Thorne, the score being 9—6. Each ‘ side won two combined doubles. J When their match with Citizens was . abondoned, the Wyndham players were i i leading comfortably in the three sets 1 then in progress. On their way home, the team stopped at the Edendale courts, which were quite dry, and en- , joyed an excellent practise match. | The Wyndham and St. Andrew’s B ; grade teams finished their match with j an exciting climax. The last match to be . played was the top men’s singles be- I : tween H. Morrison (Wyndham) and : G. L. Gardyne (St. Andrew’s). When these two players stepped on to the ’ court, St. Andrew’s led by 8 sets to I seven, but Wyndham had 94 games to the visitors’ 90. Thus to win the match Wyndham had to win the single. The earlier stages of the game favoured Gardyne, who profited by the numerous simple mistakes of his opponent. Later, however, Morrison steadied and took the lead at B—7. Gardyne evened at 8 all, and in an exciting final game, on which hung the result of the whole match, Morrison snatched a close vic- I tory. In no other club has the same en- | thusiasm been shown this season as at I Wyndham. This club has an active 1 membership of over 40 men and women, many of whom are beginners. Challenges are very frequent, having been played in the past week. C. A. Sharp, the top man, survived two challenges recently. The first was from L. G. Townsend, who, had he been able to last the pace, would probably have reI gained his old position. He won the I first set B—6, but lost the others, 6—4, ■ 6—4. A. Strang and Sharp also had an I interesting game. After taking the first I set 6—3, Sharp had a lead of 5—3, 40—15, in the second, but Strang saved the game and drew level at 5 all. Playing steadily, however, Sharp ran out the winner, B—6. The latest acquisition to the Wyndham Club is C. H. Baird, who is at home for the ’Varsity vacation. Baird is the youngest son of Dr J. H. Baird, who is still as keen as ever. Like his father, C. H. Baird plays an attractive game, and he should easily win his way into the A team. The Wyndham A team, for the match i v. Citizens, to-day will be: C. A. Sharp, A. T. Strang, J. Henderson, C. W. Rout, Miss H. Baird, Miss M. Baird, Mrs . E. J. Traynor, Miss A. Bogue. | WAIAU ASSOCIATION.
