Triplets Come of Age

An interesting event took place in the Masonic social hall, Wyndham, when triplet brothers celebrated their twenty-first birthday. The young men were Messrs Edward, Herbert and Harold Genge, sons of Mrs J. E. Genge, of Pit road, Menzies Ferry, at whose invitation a large number of friends gathered to celebrate the occasion. The time was mainly occupied with dancing, for which music was supplied by Mr W. T. Lobb, with extras by Messrs T. K. Clarke and F. S. McDonald. The duties of master of ceremonies were carried out by Mr H. Hayes. Novelty dances were won by Mr E. Genge and Miss Day, Mr H. McLellan and Miss V. Cooper and Mr and Mrs James McDonald. During the evening Mr A. W. Archibald sang a song. After supper the guests of honour were piped to the stage by Piper D. McLeod. Each carried a story of the three-tiered birthday cake (the gift of their relations, the Day family). Each tier was separated from the other by pillars, and was surmounted by large gold keys. Mr W. T. Lobb expressed gratification at seeing so many present to honour the brothers. It was probably the first time in the history of Southland that triplets had celebrated such an event, he said. On behalf of those present, he asked each to accept a wristlet watch. He then called on Mrs J. Burrows, of. Gore, to fasten on the watches. In doing so, Mrs Burrows said that she herself was also one of triplets, all of whom were alive, and had attained their majority many years ago.

Mrs T. M. Strang said she was a member of the Wyndham Plunket Society when the triplets were bom 21 years ago. She hoped that those present would realize the good work done by the Plunket Society when they saw the splendid specimens of young men the triplets had grown to. Other speakers were Messrs S. Day, R. Shields, E. Day, C. J. Burrows, A. W. Archibald and W. J. Marsh. Mr Genge then presented each of his sons with a gold key. Mr Harold Genge replied on behalf of himself and his brothers.
