A SUCCESSFUL SEASON

ST. PAUL’S AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB ANNUAL DINNER Strong in numbers, and strong in optimism for the coming season, members of the St. Paul’s Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club gathered in the Tudor Lounge last evening for the annual club dinner. Mr T. B. Dorman was in the chair and associated with him was the club patron, the Rev. C. J. Tocker. Proposing the toast of club champions and representatives, Mr D. J. B. Dorman said that everyone in a club was a club representative. But the toast referred to those who had won club championships, or had represented the club in inter-club competition. W. J. Atley was an outstanding representative. He had represented Otago at the New Zealand championships. R. Jenkins, who had won the Otago junior broad jump title, was another prominent representative. Deserving of special mention was A. L. Hind, who had been in every club track and harrier team since the club had opened. Mr Dorman also referred to the ability and enthusiasm of the Tussock Creek representatives. Messrs W. J. Atley and W. Clark replied. The toast of the controlling bodies was proposed by Mr G. H. Boyes. He said that he held very strong views on the control of amateur athletics. People took up amateur athletics for various reasons, but the reasons were not substantial enough to make the sport into a business. To secure the most enjoyment from the sport, controlling bodies were necessary. Mr Boyes then referred to the controlling bodies of the sport in Southland and the nart they played in placing amateur athletics on a footing of sound sportsmanship. The two clubs, Invercargill and St. Paul’s, had been responsible for founding the association in Southland, said Mr W. E. Mclndoe in reply. Visits of overseas athletes would not be possible unless there was co-operation in the administrative side of the sport, Mr Mclndoe continued. It was a significant fact that the visits of overseas athletes to Invercargill had brought a revival of interest in amateur athletics. The Southland Amateur Sports Trust had always been of great assistance to the sport, Mr Mclndoe concluded. The association was also indebted to the Southland Rugby Football Union for the use of the park. Mr George Kidd, the caretaker at Rugby Park, was another who gave valuable assistance to every amateur athlete. Mr W. Atley, sen., proposed a toast to kindred bodies, representatives of outside clubs replying.

Mr M. Glubb proposed a vote of thanks to all club officials. In reply Mr T. B. Dorman emphasized the strong club spirit that made for proper cooperation between officials and competitors. In presenting the trophies won for the season, Mr Tocker said that he wished to congratulate the club on a very successful season. The following trophies were presented: Senior cross-country championship, A. L. Hind; second in senior cross-country championship, H. Dunlop; handicap cross-country race, G. Couling; junior cross-country champion, B. McAlister; second junior championship, W. Miller; junior handicap cross-country race, N. Dorman; steeplechase champion, R. Woods; handicap steeplechase, V. Adamson; first novice, J. Clark; club road race handicap, J. Berry; second handicap road race, J. Waddell; most improved juniorharrier, G. C. Alington.
