Competition Games Commenced INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR B MATCHES i The first of the Southland Lawn Tennis Association’s competition matches of the season were played on Saturday, when games in the senior B and intermediate grades were played. The weather was fine and in the early part of the afternoon, warm, but later it grew cold and constant movement was necessary for warmth. In the senior B competition wins were secured by Winton, Bluff, St. Mary’s and Rugby Park. In the intermediate competition Tisbury, Waihopai, Kennington and Invercargill were victorious. The detailed results were as follows:— SENIOR B. BLUFF vTsOUTHEND. Playing at Bluff the home team defeated Southend by 11 sets to 5. Southend won only one of the men’s singles and one of the women’s singles, but did better in the mixed doubles. D. B. Hamilton, formerly of Gladstone, strengthened the Bluff team and won all his games comfortably. Southend would have been even lower in the sets if A. Breen had not been playing so consistently. RUGBY PARK v. MAKAREWA. Makarewa justified its promotion to senior B grade when, on the Rugby Park courts, it narrowly lost to the home team by eight games. Each team secured eight sets. Rugby Park, however, won more convincingly in two of the mixed doubles and this brought it a narrow victory.

In a closely-contested game played at the Georgetown courts Kennington defeated Georgetown by nine sets to

seven. It was a race between the Kennington women and the Georgetown men. Kennington’s success in the mixed doubles brought it victory. There were about 35 members present at the official opening of the Gladstone Tennis Club’s courts on Saturday. The president (Mr B. W. Hewat) formally declared the season open and, in doing so, said that last season had been a sucfessful one from all points of view. Members had displayed a keen interest in the activities of the club and the teams entered in the Southland Lawn Tennis Association’s competitions had performed creditably, especially the senior B team. Members were the guests of Mrs Hewat at afternoon tea. During the afternoon the annual meeting was held. The following office-bearers were elected:—President, Mr B. W. Hewat; vice-presidents, Messrs H. J. Macalister. H. E. Russell and H. K. Sumpter; secretary, Mr H. K. Carswell; treasurer, Mr D. Howarth; club captain, Dr O. J. Yule; committee, Messrs G. F. C.
