DISEASE AMONG CATTLE

Herd Of Jerseys

Destroyed

ACTION TAKEN BY DEPARTMENT

(United Press Association.)

Hawera, September 26. Condemned by the Department of Agriculture because of the incidence of Johnes disease, 103 head of Jersey cattle in the Kaupokonui-Otakeho district have been slaughtered as a precaution against the spread of the disease by contagion. For some years past a farm and herd have been under certain restrictions by the department in the endeavour to eliminate the diseased animals, one by one, but the infection of the soil made the task difficult. Tire drastic action of destroying the whole herd resulted from the change of ownership of the herd. Compensation has been arranged under the Stock Act. The farm is to be closed to cattle for several years. The incidence of Johnes disease in 12 other herds in the Hawera district is .mown to the department which is arranging for a fully qualified veterinarian to be stationed here for special work.
