Edendale THE ATHLETIC SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Edendale Sports Society was held in the Public Hall, about 20 members attending. Mr J. A. McDonald presided. The president moved the adoption of the report, previously published, and balance-sheet. He said the society had had one of the most successful years since its inception. It had been favoured with fine weather for its annual sports on Christmas Day, and the gate receipts had shown a big increase. Having attended all lhe sports meetings in Southland, he could safely say that none was conducted better than the Edendale Sports. The motion was seconded by Mr George Frame and carried unanimously. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr D. F.

Sandys Wunsch; president, Mr J. A.

McDonald; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Phillips and W. Irvine; secretary, Mr R. A. Marshall; assistant secretary, Mr J. T. Secular; treasurer, Mr T. Hickey; auditor, Mr W. W. Chaplin; general committee, last year’s members were re-elected; programme committee, last year’s programme committee was reelected, with the addition of Messrs K. McLean, T. Cocker (bushcraft); timekeepers, Messrs O. Baird and W. McDonald; gatekeepers, Messrs T. Hickey, J. Blair and A. Monagan; bellman, Mr J. Calder; Press stewards, Mr H. Hickey; announcer, Mr W. D. McLean and James Marshall; dancing stewards, Messrs George Dickson and J. Eades; piping steward, Mr C. McPherson. It was decided to donate £2 2/- towards the fund in aid of Mr Ford. A letter was received asking the society’s support for the proposal to bring over two Australian cyclists to compete at various meetings during the season. The cost to the Edendale Society would be only about £lO, it was stated. ,

Several members spoke in favour of the offer, the opinion being expressed that other New Zealand professionals would be attracted by the Australian competition. On the motion of Messrs W. Irvine and K. McLean, it was decided that, if possible, the cyclists should be engaged to appear at tire Edendale meeting. Mr Irvine outlined the Town Board’s proposal to employ one permanent man, if all the sports bodies were agreeable. The Sports Society’s share would cost £5 a year, which would entitle it to have its grounds prepared for the annual sports. It was decided that the society should fall in with the board’s proposal next year.

Mr W. Cameron, of Mataura, was reelected the society’s piper. It was decided to engage the Wyndham Pipe Band for the sports.
