League of Mothers

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held yesterday afternoon. Mrs W. A. Edwards presided over a large attendance of members. Among the correspondence was a letter from Mrs Ward, Dominion secretary, stating that the conference was to be held in Wellington in November, and suggesting that a delegate be sent. The afternoon was devoted to competitions and recipes, and during the latter there were some interesting exchanges including! some worth while hints. Some of the most interesting were as follows:— A Cleaning Agent One packet of Hudson’s soap powder and one pound of whiting mixed eogether to a fine powder are good for cleaning baths, basins and sinks. Keep stored in jars. To Clean Windows. Half a cup of methylated spirits, half a cup of kerosene and one cup of water mixed together clean and polish windows and mirrors satisfactorily. One Seed Cake. Two heaped of flour into which put a large teaspoon of baking powder and half a teaspoon of salt. Beat Jib of butter and Jib of sugar to a cream, add three eggs, one at a time, put in half the flour then six tablespoons of cold water, then the rest of the flour, to which has been added two teaspoons of caraway seed. Bake in a greased, floured tin. This makes a delicious cherry cake as well if cherries are substituted for the seeds. Eggless Crumb Cake. Take two teacups of flour, one cup of brown sugar, one cup of butter. Mix these together until quite crumbly. Now take out one good cup of the mixture and put aside. To the other portion add three-quarters of a cup of milk, one cup each of raisins and currants, one teaspoon soda dissolved in a little warm water. Put mixture into tin and spread the other cup of mixture, then cake. Bake for 1J hours. The crumbs on the top will melt and form a layer like a caramel icing.
