Mr R. B. Bennett, a former Prime Minister of Canada, arrived in Dunedin last night and will remain there until Saturday.—Press Association. The appointment of Mr R. E, Price and Mr Samuel Ritchie as Conciliation Commissioners, the first appointment dating from September 14 and the second from October 1 was officially Gazetted last night.—Press Association. Mr James Begg and Mr Thomas Andrew Duncan have been appointed producers’ representatives on the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, according to a notice appearing in the Gazette last night.—Press Association.
At the annual meeting of the Southland Rowing Association a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr George McLauchlan, for the past two years chairman of the New Zealand Rowing Association Council, was passed. At last evening’s meeting of the Invercargill Lawn Tennis Association mention was made of the loss the club had suffered by the deaths of Messrs J. Dobbie and T. P. Royds and Miss Stuckey. Members stood for a moment in silence.
Senior Detective S. G. Hall, of Auckland, has been appointed Chief Detective in charge of the detective staff at Auckland, in succession to Inspector J. Sweeney, who is about to take charge of the Wellington police district. Senior Detective Hall joined the Police Force in Dunedin in 1908, and was appointed a senior detective in 1933, when he was transferred from Oamaru. —Press Association.
Dr G. B. Orbell, of Invercargill, returned to New Zealand by the Marama. Dr Orbell has been absent from New Zealand for some time and has returned to set up in Invercargill as an ophthalmic surgeon. While in England he took up a course in eye work at the Moorfield Hospital, the largest eye hospital in England, where he obtained an extra diploma. On the trip from Sydney he was able to give valuable assistance to Captain R. M. Kane, master of the Marama, who had to be operated on hurriedly.
