Morton Mains

WOMEN’S DIVISION BIRTHDAY The sixth birthday of the Morton Mains branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the hall, which had been decorated for the occasion with spring flowers and greenery. The programme for the afternoon was as follows: Pianoforte duets, Miss T. McFadyen and Miss L. McLay; song, Miss E. Sheat; recitation, Mrs J. B. Falconer. A playette “What a Night!” was staged, the following being the players: Misses M. and E. Withington, E. Sheat and M. Moss and Mrs J. B. Falconer. Competitions also added to the enjoyment of all present, everyone joining in wholeheartedly. These were won by Misses L. McLay <2), Jean Halliday and Corkery. Afternoon tea was then served, after which the birthday cake (made and decorated by the president, Mrs Warnock) was brought in by the youngest member, Miss L. McLay. The six candles were lit by Mrs H. Meredith, and blown out by Mrs J. Halliday. The cake was cut by Mrs Munro. The following extended congratulations and each cut a slice on behalf of the branch she represented, Mrs Arnott (Seaward Downs), Mrs Young (Hedgehope), Mrs King (Oteramika), Mrs Frew (Woodlands), Mrs Glennie (Makarewa). On the motion of Mrs Edie a vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Warnock for providing the cake. Mrs D. Pearson, who has now left the district and resides in Hedgehope, was presented with a brass candlestick by the president, who, on behalf of the members, wished her every success in her new sphere of activity. Mrs Pearson had been connected with the branch ever since its foundation, and a capable reporter for two years of that period. Musical honours were accorded the recipient, who suitably replied.
