ANNUAL REPORT The 35th annual report of the Edendale Sports’ Society is (inter alia) as follows:—A successful season is recorded It commenced with a credit balance of £55 16/9, and concluded with a balance of £73 8/6, showing on ' the year’s working a credit balance of . £l7 11/9. That was claimed, under | present economic conditions, to be veiy ( satisfactory, and it was the first oc- ; casion for some years that the society j had shown a profit on the year’s work- . ing. The match race arranged between , Flanagan and Preston proved a good ■ draw for the society, and the incoming , committee should consider ways and means to put on an attractive programme this season to keep the society progressing. The annual sports gathering held last Christmas Day, was the most successful held by the society, and was favourably commented on by visitors from near and far. The visiting and local competitors were well satisfied with the treatment they received from the officials of the society. The willing band of local officials, assisted by officials from - other societies, kept the sports moving from start to finish, and the public appreciated their efforts. Thanks were due the visiting officials for their willingness at all times to assist the society for the good of athletics in general Thanks were also due to the following who assisted in making the annual gathering a success: Mrs Shelton (judge of dancing), Mr R. C. Sutherland (judge of piping), Messrs W Murdock and A. E. Cocker (handicappers), the Press for its able reports and comments, and all others who in any way assisted the society during the past season.

TOWN BOARD MEETING The monthly meeting of the Edendale I Town Board was held in the Board Room, the following members being present: Commissioners William Irvine (chairman), R. Wilson, M. D. Turner W. W. Chaplin, G. P. Dempster, and T. Hickey. Acting on a report from the inspector, it was decided that R. Lockie and Miss H. P. Hall, Seaward Downs road, be asked to cut back their fences from the board’s footpaths. Discussion arose as to the value or otherwise of riverbed and pit gravel. Cr Dempster said pit gravel cost them 4/- per cubic yard, but he was sure it could be procured for less from the riverbed. As the gravel contract for the year has already been let, the matter was held over till next year. It was decided to accept an offer from the Wyndham Amateur Players to stage a revue in aid of the hall funds, under the same terms as last year. The sum of £5 was voted towards the cost of laying a new tennis court on the board’s reserve, the chairman remarking that such an action would show the young people that the board was interested in them. The balance-sheet, duly audited, was presented by the clerk. Regarding work for unemployed, it was stated that district factories would absorb some of their registered unemployed. It was decided to wait and ascertain how many men would have to be provided for. The matter of employing a permanent man to do the work now done by several casual employees was held over. Hall Committee’s Activities. An application from the Flower Show committee for permission to store material under the stage was granted. The chairman handed in the sum of £2 6/- being the proceeds from the last of the weekly quadrilles in the hall. This brought the total revenue from that source up to £33. It was intimated that arrangements for securing a loan of £3OO were nearly complete. When the loan was secured, ■ the financial position of the hall would continue to improve each year. BADMINTON MATCHES Six leading players of the Invercargill Badminton Club, accompanied by Mr R. Hanan, visited the newly-formed Edendale Club, and staged a few exhibition matches. The visiting players were, Messrs Braithwaite 4 Mitchell, Hobbs, Challis, Reid and Barton. There was a good crowd of spectators present. The players were welcomed by Mr E. W. Cate (president of the Edendale Club); and Mr Hanan suitably replied. The first game was a men’s doubles match between Braithwaite and Mitchell (the present Southland champions) and Hobbs and Barton. Some bright exchanges were witnessed. Mr Hanan explained and demonstrated correct positional play in men’s and combined doubles and also the different types of service. Several other matches with local players were also played. Before the visitors left for home, they were entertained at supper by lady supporters of the Edendale Club.
