The Misses Grace and Phyllis Cowie, Balfour, who have been the guests of their cousin, Miss Margaret Roy, Gore, have returned home. Mr and Mrs IL J. Macalister, Duke street, leave to-morrow evening for Wellington, where they sail by the Awatea on Tuesday to spend a holiday in Australia. Mrs Adkins, of Caversham, with her three daughters, has returned home after being the guest of her mother, Mrs M. Hamilton, Teviot street, for the school holidays.

The engagement is announced of Sheila Alison, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs C. Williams, West Plains, to George David, second son of Mr and Mrs W. Gordon, Burnside, Garston.

Miss Yvonne Levvey, of Christchurch, and formerly of Invercargill, who was a guest at the Club Hotel, was entertained by a number of friends during her stay in Invercargill. Miss Ellen M. Rose, who has had six months’ leave of absence from the Southland Hospital Board, rejoined the staff of the hospital last week. During her leave Miss Rose took a special post graduate course for nurses in Wellington, and gained her diploma of nursing.

The engagement is announced between Mr Thomas Rowley Smith, son of the late Mr and Mrs Robert Kermode Smith, of Malvern Downs Station, Tarras, and Miss Violet Livingston, daughter of the late Mr James Livingston and Mrs A. E. McDougall, of “Kenwood,” Dunnottar, Dunedin.

Cassels called on Miss G. Stewart, Dipton, in the absence of the Northern president, Mr Holden, to present the McGill Cup to the team captain, Miss H. Dillon. On receiving the cup Miss Dillon, on behalf of the team, thanked Mrs Cassels for her coaching during the year and stated that this year the team held an unbroken record. Miss E. Ewan, Dipton, also congratulated the Balfour team on its success. The winners of the novelty dances were: Statue dance, Mr J. Fitzgerald and Miss E. Bennett; lucky spot dance, Mr J. R. Keown and Mrs P. McDonald; Monte Carlo, Mr Hefferman and Miss Cody. During the evening Mr F. Robinson sang a solo. Messrs A. Liddell and W. Weavers were masters of ceremonies.

ANNUAL BALL. The annual ball of the Winton Joekey Club was held in the Radio Hall, I Winton, last evening. Coloured lights and streamers decorated the hall and I the Revellers’ orchestra supplied the music. The president, Mr F. Cowie, and Mrs Cowie, received the guests. The Caledonian Society’s . second grand old-time ball was held in Victoria Hall during the week. The attendance was even greater than at the previous function. Some 200 couples danced to music played by the Silver Fem orchestra. Proceedings were again broadcast by station 4ZP. The Caledonian Pipe Band was in attendance, playing selections outside the hall as well as for the grand march and some of the dances.

The old timers’ concert party gave items between the dances, while pupils of Mr A. Sutherland’s dancing, school provided an enjoyable entertainment. Mr A. Sutherland was master of ceremonies. The grand march was led by Mr and Mrs George Taylor.

Dinner and Dance

EASTERN DISTRICT HUNT CLUB. An enjoyable function took place in the Mandeville Hall last Wednesday evening, when the members of the Eastern District Hunt Club held their annual dinner and dance following the final meet of the season. The hall was attractively decorated for the occasion with green and black streamers and boughs of cherry blossom. The master, Mr A. Wayte (Otamita) presided at the dinner, which was attended by a large number of members and visitors from various parts of Southland, The following was the toast list: “The Eastern District Hunt Club,” proposed by Mr Horne, Mataura, and responded to by Mr A. Wayte and the joint master, Mr M. Roche; “Property Owners” (Mr George Wayte—Mr J. H. McLeod and Mr W. Dickson; “The Visitors” (Mr W. Wayte—Mr Holms, Waimahaka); “The Ladies” (Mr M. H. Penny—Mr N. Kelly); “The Chairman” (Mr W. D. McLeod—Mr A. Wayte). Items were contributed by Mr R. W. Stevenson, songs; Mrs M. Cronin, recitations; Mr B. Ostlund, songs; and Mr Horne, short stories. The hunting choruses, “John Peel” and “Drink, Puppy, Drink,” were led by Mr A. Wayte and Messrs G. and W. Wayte. The accompaniments were played by Miss Jean Wayte and Miss Nora Kelly.
