STATE GRANTS

FEDERAL COMMISSION’S RECOMMENDATIONS SMALLER AMOUNTS (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Canberra, September 11. The grants to the States of the Commonwealth of Australia recommended by the Commonwealth Grants Commission have not met with the approval of some of the prospective recipients. The commission, in its third report, which was tabled in the House of Representatives, recommended the following allocations for the year 193637:— £ South Australia 1,330,000 West Australia 500,000 Tasmania 600,000 The total, £2,430,000 is £320,000 less than the amount, £2,110,000, recommended last year. Premier Surprised. The Premier of South Australia (Mr R. L. Butler) expressed surprise when informed of the recommendations. He said that he would be forced to budget for a deficit, because the Government had no time to make alterations in the Budget, which was already prepared. A strong protest against the reduction in West Australia’s grant has been telegraphed to the Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons) by the acting-Premier (Mr M. F. Troy).
