(From The Southland Times.) SEPTEMBER 12, 1886. A Townsman Returns.— By the mail steamer Ruapehu, which arrived at Port Chalmers on Saturday, our respected townsman, Mr George Lumsden, returned from his visit to Scotland. District Band Contest.—The following bands have entered for the district band contest which takes place in Sloan’s Theatre on November 8:— Queenstown Volunteer, Wyndham Town, Mosgiel Factory, Invercargill City and Invercargill Blue Ribbon. Waimutuku Dairy Factory.— After experiencing some considerable difficulty in procuring the services of an expert for the management of the dairy at Waimutuku we learn that the directors have appointed to the charge of the establishment Mr James Linton, to whom we. wish every success. Town District of Gordon.—Five members are required for election to the Town Board. The nomination took place on Friday night, when no fewer than nine candidates indicated to stand, namely, Messrs Gilbert, Hood, Hunter, J. McGaw, J. Mac Gibbon, McKay, Penny, Smith and Ryder. An Eye to Business.— The Victorian Postmaster-General has concluded arrangements whereby the result of the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups can be received by any person resident in the colony by the payment of sixpence on the morning of the race.
