SOUTHLAND COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Southland County Council met yesterday. There were present: Councillors F. F. Trapski (chairman), T. Golden, W. M. Norman, G. A. Wraytt, G. W. Whittingham, J. McNeil, A. S. McNaught, J. Dennis and L. A. Niederer. Nine residents of the Browns district, all users of the present water system at Browns, wrote petitioning the council to make arrangements for the formation of a water board to be named “The Browns Water Board.” The peti-, tioners stated that they were agreeable to the formation of the board for the control of the water supply in Browns. The question was referred to the member for the riding, the county engineer and the county clerk with power to act. Mr J. A. Lindsay, district railways traffic manager, wrote stating that considerable difficulty had been experienced because of cattle wandering on to the railway land at Waimahaka. “Stock wander about the roads there,” the letter said, “and gain access through the station, gates to the railway land at the station. The station gates cannot be kept closed during business hours. Stock on a railway line constitute a grave dangex- to trains.” It was decided to send fi copy of the letter to the surfaceman fh the district and also to the police constable at Tokanui. A donation of £5 5/- was made to the Wallacetown Cemetery Trust towards the upkeep of the Wallacetown Old cemetery.
