TENNIS STARS FOR AUSTRALIA
VON CRAMM AND TILDEN It is quite on the cards that the great German tennis player, Baron von Cramm and his Davis Cup team-mate, Henkel, may visit Australia this year. This announcement followed the receipt of a letter by the president of the New South Wales Lawn Tennis Association, Mr Bryan Fuller, from Berlin recently. Von Cramm and Henkel were to have played in the American championships, and for that reason were unable to accept Australia’s invitation to play in Australia this year. According to the letter received by Mr Fuller, the Germans have changed their plans. They intend to visit Florida and will miss the American championships. If negotiations are reopened they will probably accept an invitation to come to Australia. The Australian Lawn Tennis Association will be asked to take the necessary steps. A visit by Tilden and Vines is also exercising the minds of Australian tennis fans at present. The Australian Lawn Tennis Association has declared itself against the promotion of professional matches, but it was strongly indicated at a meeting of the New South Wales Association that the proposed tour by the Americans would eventuate. A chief point in dispute of the possibility of the professional matches was that Tilden and Vines would receive the lion’s share of the gate receipts, detrimentally affecting the gate for'the amateur championship meetings. The Victorian Association supports New South Wales in its desire to have Tilden and Vines. The Americans are prepared to play in Australia in November and part of December, to make the trip without guarantee and to pay all their expenses, travelling and othervzise.
