CYCLING NOTES
(By
“Low-Gear.”)
FIXTURES: To-day.—3o miles, Mabel Bush and return. September 19.—50 miles, Otago Championship. October 3.—56 miles, Southland championship. October 17.—100 miles, Gorges race, Christchurch. To-day's race of 30 miles has drawn a big field, and all riders should be seen at their best as all have been training hard lately. To-morrow an 85-mile trial run will be held, starting at the usual place at 10 a.m. sharp. The course will be main North road to Winton, out through Browns and Hedgehope, and across the hills to Mataura, returning home via Edendale and Woodlands and finishing on the East road. All riders are asked to turn out as the selectors will be in attendance and the team of the best 10 riders will be selected to go into special training for the Gorges race. Several riders are training rather too much at present over long distances. Once a man is fit for too long a period staleness is usually the result. The Christchurch race is still five weeks away. Fifteen riders intend riding in the Otago championship next Saturday and the club should have a good chance of lifting the Teachers Cup for the teams’ race. This cup has been taken from Dunedin only once by the Invercargill Club—two years ago when A. Tanguse was first, H. Insall second, L. Bloy fourth and J. Jackson seventh, making a total of 14 points. Otago was second with 36 points. L. Bloy is now back in town after an absence of four months. He will now settle down to solid training, as he is not half fit yet. C. A. Robinson and his brother Harold both have new cycles, and have started training. J. Humphries, A. Drury and S. Douglas left on Wednesday on a cycling tour to Christchurch, and will be returning to Dunedin for the 50mile race next Saturday.
