EMPLOYEES OF CIVIL ENGINEERS
PROFESSIONAL MEN APPLY FOR UNION LEGISLATION. (United Press Association.) Auckland, September 10. The professional men employed by Auckland civil engineers, surveyors and architects have made application to the Registrar of Industrial Unions in Wellington for registration of a union of workers covering their activities. A decision to form this union was made some months ago, but until advice is received from the registrar it will not be known just how wide the scope of the union will be. It has been proposed that engineers, architects and surveyors employed by local bodies should be included as members of the union, instead of joining the Local Body Officers’ Union, which has been promised registration, the contention being that the craft, rather than the employment, should be the deciding factor. On the other hand, the president of the Local Government Officers’ Guild stated that the proposed union should not include local body architects, engineers and surveyors, who should be members of the guild, as their work was bound up with local government as an “industry.” They were working side by side with municipal workers and should be members of the guild of which he was president and which had already been promised registration as a union. ___________
