THE BASIC WAGE
NO APPLICATION TO APPRENTICES DIVISION OF OPINION (United Press Association.) Wellington, September 10. The Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) stated to-day that it was not his intention that the basic wage should apply to those serving apprenticeships under the Apprentices Act, but there was a division of opinion among the legal advisers of the Government whether it should apply. He, therefore, was considering the question of making the position clear by introducing a further clause. The Minister said that the delay in fixing the basic wage did not matter much, because the Court was the deciding factor as to when the basic wage was to operate. The suggestion of setting up a temporary Court to assist the Arbitration Court was receiving consideration.
