RELIEF WORKERS
Petitions Withdrawn From House (From Our Parliamentary Reporter). Wellington, September 10. Four petitions from relief workers asking for improved conditions and pay were withdrawn in the House of Repre- * sentatives to-day at the desire of the members who had presented them. The petitions, in the aggregate, represented a large number of men. One from Huntly, signed by 27 petitioners, asked for an increase of 10/- a week for relief workers and men receiving sustenance. Another, also from Huntly, signed by 22 men, asked for a minimum wage of 14/- a day and a 40-hour week for relief workers on schemes financed or subsidized by the Unemployment Board. Two Christchurch petitions, with a total of, over 10,000 signatures, put forward similar requests. In each case the Public Petitions Committee reported that it, was the desire of the member presenting the petition that it should be withdrawn and in each case this course was adopted.
