MODERATE WINDS AND SCATTERED RAIN. (Special to The Times.) Wellington, September 10. Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland:— Moderate south-easterly winds, veering by south to west and northwest during Friday and freshening. Weather mainly fair and cool, but with some scattered rains in coastal and western areas. Seas rather rough to rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather unsettled generally with intermittent rain and some snow on the ranges. Temperatures becoming cooler, but conditions improving temporarily to-morrow in most districts. General Situation.—A depression is crossing the Dominion to-day. An anticyclone is following it across the north Tasman Sea, but a fresh westerly depression is now moving on to the south-west Tasman. Winds.—Moderate to strong generally and still reaching gale force at places, especially from Cook Strait northwards, northerly to westerly prevailing north of Westport and Akaroa and southerly thence southwards, but winds between west and south becoming general. Seas.—New Zealand waters, moderate in coastal waters on the east coast, otherwise rough; eastern Tasman Sea, strong south-west to west winds and rough seas. The weather in Invercargill yesterday was fine but cold. In the evening light rain fell. At one o’clock this morning the weather was fine, though the sky remained overcast. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows:— This morning (steady) 29.50 in. Yesterday 29.40 in. Wednesday 29.68 in.
