MAGISTRATE’S COURT
THURSDAY. (Before Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M.) Denis Hunt, aged 60 (Mr J. Tait) pleaded guilty io stealing a woman’s bicycle valued at £6, the property of Amy Shepherd. Detective-Sergeant Thompson said that the cycle had been recently disposed of to a second-hand dealer. There was reason to believe accused had not actually stolen the bicycle, but he committed theft by disposing of the machine. Mr Tait explained that the bicycle had been left on his premises and the accused eventually decided to dispose of it. The Magistrate: Thefts of bicycles are very hard to detect, especially when the machines are repainted another colour. The accused will be sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. , Leo Arthur Walker pleaded guilty to travelling by rail from Kingston to Invercargill without first paying the proper fare. Senior-Sergeant Kelly, who prosecuted, said that the offence had been committed about five months ago. The accused had now received a Public Works job. Walker undertook to give an order on his pay and the Magistrate fined him 10/-, the amount tc be paid within one month. Civil Cases. Judgment by delault in favour of the plaintiffs was entered in the following civil cases: J. L. McG. Watson v. John Alfred Hamilton (Hedgehope) for £3O 6/7 and costs £4 3/6; L. A. Blackmore (assignee of the estate of F. A. Dawson) v. Sidney Scott for £1 0/3 and costs 14/-; R. A. Ferrier v. R. C. Collett for £2 7/6 and costs £1 5/6; Iles and Roscow v. R. Harvey (Winton), for £5 and costs £1 3/6; same v. R. J. Fraser for £4 and costs £1 5/6; Tappers Limited v C. G. Grieve for £8 17/- and costs £1 13/6. Robert George Hepburn Robertson (Otautau) was sentenced to 21 days’ imprisonment in default of the payment forthwith of £l6 18/3 to his judgment creditor, Thomas George Helm. Hugh Molloy (Ohai) was ordered to pay £5 7/3 forthwith to his judgment creditor, B. D. Edginton, in default seven days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as the judgment debtor pays 10/- a week in reduction of the debt. False Pretences. Henry John Dean, of Christchurch, pleaded guilty to a charge of selling a bicycle which he represented as his own property. Detective-Sergeant Thompson said that accused secured a bicycle in Dunedin on the hire-purchase system. Only a small portion of the value had been paid when he sold the machine to a dealer in Invercargill. Accused was fined £3 10/- and ordered to make restitution of the money he received for the sale of the bicycle.
