The time between the accident and the arrival at hospital would be still further reduced when the latter was at Kew. The Mayor explained that the discussion was raised so that he would have something concrete to bring before a public meeting, if it was considered necessary. Cr. Newman said that an ambulance was a necessity at Bluff and probably the Harbour Board and shipping companies would join in sharing the cost. It was decided to call a meeting to have the matter publicly discussed. MISSION LECTURE A lecture illustrated with lantern slides was given in the Methodist Church by the Rev. A. H. Scrivin, general superintendent of overseas missions for the Methodist Church of New Zealand. The Rev. A. E. Waite presided, and extended a welcome to the lecturer, who had served for 20 years in overseas work in Papua. The slides illustrated the work of the Methodist Church in the Solomon Islands. Although only 34 years have passed since the first missionaries landed in those savage islands, where head hunting and cannibalism of the cruellest and most degraded kind were rife, these terrible practices have been completely eliminated, and former cannibals are now earnest Christian workers and church members living in harmony and security, said the lecturer. A remarkable picture showed a number of young men who were theological students preparing for educational work among their own people and whose parents were bitter enemies, destroying and eating one another. The most useful educational work was also undertaken, and a photograph was shown of a large group of young people, all of whom could read and write, both their own language and also rudimentary English. In all cases the teachers were natives who had been trained by the mission schools.
