The annual meeting of the _ South- ' land Cricket Umpires’ Association was held last evening, Mr J. Hamilton (president), presiding. The annual report was adopted. Advice was received of an amend- > ment by the M.C.C. to Law 41, whereby in the event of a ball being illegally stopped by a fieldsman five runs are to be added to any runs actually run at the time of the offence, and if no runs have been run, five runs are to be added to the score. This decision overrides a ruling obtained some time ago j by the association from the New Zealand Cricket Council to the effect that only five runs were to be added to the score in any case. The following officers were elected: Patron, the incoming president of the Southland Cricket Association; presi- ■ dent, Mr R. Taylor; vice-president, Mr W. Baker; honorary secretary, Mr C. J C. Harris; appointment board, Messrs R. : Taylor, J. Hamilton and C. C. Harris; I board of examiners, Messrs R. Taylor, : W. Baker and W. A. H. The chairman complimented the club on its successes of last season and hoped that the grades would do well i on the playing fields this season. The | club’s finances were in a better state I than for some time past, and it was , pleasing to record a credit balance. The material purchasing scheme had been brought into operation for the first time last season and it had been an outstanding success. All round the prospects of the club were very bright for the coming season. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: Patrons, Messrs J. D. Campbell, H. F. Drewe and G. F. Watson; president, Sir Robert Anderson; vice-presidents, Messrs R. M. Strang, D. J. Wesney, E. V. Mills, G. Broughton, W. Henderson, J. S. Brass, W. A. H. Oliver and J. L. Watson and Dr F. O. ANNUAL MEETING. The 1935-36 season of the Southend Tennis Club was the most successful it had had since its foundation, stated the report presented to the annual meeting. The weather had been ideal and the success of the members in both club competitions and in tournament play was unprecedented in the club’s history. The membership had again fallen and now stood at 41 of which three were free members. It was essential that the membership should be increased if the courts were to be kept in first class order. “The playing record for the year is as follows,” the report said. “A team, played 6, won 4, lost 2; B team, played 8, won 6, lost 2; C team, played 7, won 7, lost nil. The A team in finishing the season as runners-up to Invercargill accomplished a very fine performance. The B team also performed creditably and finished the season in third position. To the members of the C team, however, the heartiest congratulations are extended. They maintained an unbeaten record for the season’s play and are now holders of the Baird Cup. The success of this team is undoubtedly due to the enthusiasm of the members, and the committee is grateful for the assistance and co-operation of Miss N. Croad. “Messrs L. Gray and R. McCallum in winning the South Island men’s doubles championship at Dunedin accomplished the most meritorious performance ever credited to Southland tennis players. The committee heartily congratulates them and also Miss Joyce Lamont, who retained the Southland girls’ championship. Mr McCallum and Miss J. Kelly gained representative honours during the season. The performances of these players have been of a particularly high standard and have done a great deal to raise the club’s prestige. “The result of the club championships for the season are as follows: Men’s singles, L. W. Gray; women’s singles, Miss J. Kelly; women’s doubles, Misses L. Mehaffey and J. Kelly; mixed doubles, Miss M. McCallum and L. W. Gray. “The balance-sheet shows the club to be in a sound financial position, the assets exceeding the liabilities by £405 17/4. The year’s operations enabled the committee to repay a further £22 16/6 to the Amateur Sports Trust and our indebtedness to that body is now £47 3/6.” The report was adopted. Office-bearers for the 1936-37 season were elected as follows: Patron, Mr W. Manson; president, Mr W. Rea; vicepresidents, Messrs F. Rigby, D. Reed, H. T. Thompson, F. Stevenson, A. Derbie and Dr F.
