Mataura THE BOROUGH COUNCIL

WIG-WAG DEVICE At the monthly meeting of the Mataura Borough Council there were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr John Buchanan) and Crs J. P. McErlean, C. H. Hargest, R. Hutton, J. McAllister, A. Bradley, L. McKelvie, A. J. Cruickshank, D. A. Coster and J. H. Clark. The Minister of Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) acknowledged the council’s letter about the shifting of railway fences and the erection of a wig-wag warning device at the Bridge street railway crossing. He would advise his decision later. The secretary of the Mataura Cricket Club applied to have the recreation ground rolled in readiness for the cricket season. The area had been badly cut up by two football teams during the winter months, and if allowed to dry in this state, it would be practically unfit for cricket. It was resolved to hold over the matter until application was made for the use of the ground. The works committee recommended that the walls at the entrance to the cemetery be rough-casted, the gravel entrance blinded with fine sand and gravel and the shed repaired and painted. It also recommended that the footpath in Oakland street, between Carlyle and Bangor streets, be trimmed and gravelled. Cr McErlean explained that a light at the railway station had been considered, but the black spot was on railway property and the Town Clerk had approached the Railways Department to ascertain whether it would instal a light to be utilized when trains were in. It was anticipated that something might be done. The foreman of works reported that the flanks of the main highways had been grassed. Test holes in Bridge street had been made for the proposed new bridge. The road had been widened in Culling street and gravelling had been done in Carlisle street.
