Council Of Women

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Invercargill branch of the National Council of Women was held in the Women’s Club yesterday afternoon, Mrs Stanley Brown presiding over a large attendance of members. Included in the correspondence was a letter from the Dominion secretary stating that it would be possible for Mrs R. S. Mclnnes to represent the Invercargill branch at the meeting of the executive in Wellington at the end of this month. The monthly letter from headquarters dealt with the question of suitable talks of interest to women to be broadcast. The president called for suggested subjects for these talks and the following were given: Child psychology, coeducation, women’s activities in other lands as told by women from such lands, physical culture for women, careers for women, domestic architecture and home planning, horticulture, hobbies for women and health in the home. > A paper on household employment sent out by the Social and Industrial Section of the world Y.W.C.A. executive committee was the subject for discussion. It dealt with the disadvantages of household employment from the point of view of the worker under the following headings:—(l) loss of caste; (2) long unregulated hours; (3) isolation and loss of liberty; (4) no standard contracts regulating wages and other conditions; (5) exclusion from certain social insurance. The paper also dealt with the advantages of household employment as a vocation, and the difficulties of employers. The schemes in different countries to improve conditions were fully described, and the necessity of building up a body of trained and certified workers was

stressed. Members agreed that the object of the present time was to raise the status of the domestic worker, but this could not be done until skilled workers were obtainable. Schemes for training workers, which would be practicable in New Zealand, will be discussed at the next meeting.
